Here goes, what is the largest motor that can be installed relatively easily in the 91-93 Exciter 2 or 93 Exciter SX Chassis??
So now on the opinion side:
If a guy is building a nice powder sled, would you try to build up the stock 570 motor or go with a Vmax 600 or ???
How close dimension wise are the Vmax 600 motors or is that even an option.
The motor area on the Exciter is not that open & will be tough for any kind of performance pipes if we dont stick with the 570 sooo......??
How about a 700 triple?? Pipes would be a pain in the A%% right??
Love the old Exciter chassis for boondocking & powder riding & am looking to build one but, I want the most HP I can get without really having to screw up the engine bay area. Will be putting a newer rear skid under it like a RX-1 or similar & a 136 track. So, I want the HP to be up there a bit.
Thanks, Rob
PS: I like the older iron so this should be a fun project!!
Have access to a Vmax4 motor, but........hahahha, try stuffing that in there with the clutches & everything else huh!!

I would go with a 700 red head tripple.Very light moter probably lighter than the 570.You would have to do alot of custom work to say the least.A doner sled would be the way to go.

One year at Haydays there was a 90/91 phazer for sale with a 650 (I think) Polaris tripple stuffed under the hood. Tripple pipes in there as well. It was tight, but fit so I guess that a red head Yamaha motor could be made to fit as well.
There was an 87 exciter chassis running around that had a 800 Polaris twin in it. Pipe fit with a little custom bending. So there are all kinds of options available. Have fun with it - I've been wanting to do the same thing, but just never get around to it. Maybe I'll build one for my daughter to ride once she gets a little older.

The pre 97 600 twin bolts right in, the only issue is clearance on the airbox side because of the reeds, its a little hard to get the carbs in but no harder than an old Phazer. A triple, once you get the mounts made will go right in, we're putting a Viper in a Phazer right now, as well as theres been lots of triples in those sleds. A red head 700 with Aaen pipes would be easy, because the newer motors are case reed the only issue is the steering post which you can put a bend in to clear the carbs.

Tim Bender made a bunch of Tri 854cc exciters back in the day .I think he had to widen out the panels

Bender moved the motor over because when you use the ex cases as a triple the water pump ends up in the chain case if you try to get it inside the stock panels, he didn't really widen the sled for the motor swap, if you look at an avalanche it has a top hat on the side panel for the clutch to stick out. Thats why when I did the sled in the pic, I made a triple out of a Kawi 550 interceptor, the motor was smaller and the water pump isn't in the way. The sled in the pic is not widened when the pic was taken, however it got widened to SX EX width when the SX came out so I could use stock parts and SX struts.

I've seen a 90 Exciter with a 700 Arctic Cat 700 Twin stuffed into it with a turdo kit.

I would get a red top 700 motor and get some big bore jugs if you were really serious about some power.
I think its an 835 or something like that but I could be thinking thats for a SRX motor. Either way, that sled would scoot.
I would really like to squeeze the trigger on 800's SRX 800 in an SXR chassis he has.

700 Triple "red head"
Hey 800, that looks like one sweet install in that picture. Do you have more pics of the sled?
So the red head 700 triple would be what you would recommend for a nice conversion huh?
What year sleds was that motor in? I was "away from sledding" for a few years (96-03) & am still trying to get caught up on what was made & when it was made & what was good & what to "stay away" from!!
And since I am more of "an old iron type guy", I have not looked at the newer stuff too much.
What is the HP rating on the "red head 700"??
I am guessing I will have to get whole "donor" sled to do it right, that way I have all the other parts ie electrical, pipes, etc.etc. & part out the rest if its a solid sled.
Also, was there any interior dimension differences between the Exciter2 & the SX Exciter. My memory says the differences were the wider ski's stance & some motor tweaking & skid upgrades for the SX over the Exciter2. So the engine bay has the same amount of room, I think??
Am looking for a SX chassis, but would settle for a Exciter2 for the project if there is no real "room advantage" between the 2. Have located a 92 Exciter2 for a fair price & am thinking about it.
Would love to see the pics of your Viper in the Phazer project!! Sounds darn nice.
Thanks, Rob

There's no room advantage in either sled they are the same inside. My sled is an 87', I thought I had a pic of it in my comp but I can't find it, It's all black with a 90' PZ 2 seat and tunnel decals with an sx ski stance/struts and Vmax 4 skis.
The red head motor with Aaen pipes would be in the 135hp range be lots of fun, that Kawi I built was 142hp, again your only issue is going to be the carbs, that Kawi motor is a piston port so the carbs are much higher. Get a wreck so you can get everything you need at once otherwise you'll nickel and dime yourself to death. Get a 95-96 secondary clutch it will slide right on the shaft.
Once you get the motor mounts made the rest is a cake walk, or if you want to try to bolt it down to a plate. You can do that too, you may have seen PZ's and EX's with Cat twins in them, as well as Polaris', those all bolt to a plate makes it easier. We built those plates and mounts back in the day and sold them as a kit, Jimmy actually had Cat pipes made to fit the chassis to sell with them. I think he told me he found some motor plates laying around so if you wanted to bottom mount the motor you would be ahead of the game.

800, you do good work! The Exciter looks like it came from the factory.

Thanks Triple, that was my baby back in the day, I built that in 89' when the biggest thing on the lake was a 650 indy, then having an 800 Exciter meant something. I spent alot of time making all that fit under the hood. I'm gonna take it out and run it through the woods next year, I haven't sat on that seat since like 92'.
