I currently own a 2004 Viper S and an 2001 SRX. The SRX is completely stock except for 144 studs. I am considering buying a stock 2006 stock Apex also with 144 studs. I love the trail manners of my Viper and the fun factor of my SRX. How would the SRX and Apex compare at 660' or across a lake? And how does the Apex compare to the trail manners of a Viper S?
What would you do?

apex has long legs, buddies 06 apex beats my 2000 clutched srx in a 1/2 mile field run, unless I hit the nitrous
his won't corner as well as srx. nothing does.
but I think this year i am going to an apex.... rode his for a while. a tamer ride as i could not take the corners as agressively. but a nice ride

What really sold me about the Apex was the leg room. On the SRX after an hour of riding hard my legs really start to feel it on the Apex my legs don't get cramped or tired and i know i could put way more miles on an Apex during a day than a SRX.
i own a 06 apex er and a 01 srx and the srx jumps the apex out of the hole but the apex catches it. the apex seems to be alot twitchier on the trail, it seems like your always riding it, its hard to relax and just cruise like i can on the srx.

Wow, I'm a little surprized to read the feedback concerning handling. In March, I attended a Munising TY Ride and got a chance to meet a few members. What really sticks out in my mind about the ride is how effortllessly the Apexes in the group handled the tight trails. I actually commented to one of the members about how he was riding at a fast pace directly in front of me with one hand on the bars, through all the twistys and switchbacks. I tried it on my SRX and there was NFW I was going to stay with him (with one hand). My buddy on his SRX was is the same boat as me. And, when the pace heated up, this Apex was carrying the mail and it took everything I had to keep up to where I could still see his snow dust. And, until this ride, I have never had any problem at all screaming by anybody in the turns. We all know how SRXs fly and imagine my surprize to see a fourstroke stay out ahead on a tight trail.

nothing handles turns and twists like an srx nothing !!!!!bumps well thats another story . A buddy of mine has a turbo apex and i think he has it down around 16 lbs of boost to ride around and it has 120 ish + + legs on the lake , but he says pretty much what the other fellas say , he has to work to ride it on the trail .

I myself actually like the way the SRX feels.Sat on a Apex, didn't feel right to me.And look what the cost difference is between the 2 sleds. For a sled right out the box and with low pricing back in 01/02,the SRX's were fast sleds. Now to own a sled with the same speed or a tad more, you have to pay about 60% more in dollars. Here an Apex would be costing me new at about $16,000.I think I'll stick with my SRX.Easy to work on the SRX to.Open up the hood or side panels on the new 4 strokes, where do you begin to get in there to do something.Me I like to tinker around,so the SRX is perfect for me to do so.If you look at the gas isuue, sure the Apex is more easy on gas consumption, but for $16,000..I sure can put a lot of gas in my SRX and still have a pretty quick sled to play with anyways.I would actually like to buy a couple more SRX's,like a 2001,2000 and a 1998 models.Would be a nice collection. If I can find a great deal on one of them,I'll put out the cash to do so.

I agree with you completely BlueMonster. I have an 03 RX1 and a 2000 SRX. The SRX is by far the best sled I have ever owned in 25+ years of sledding. The fun factor of this sled cannot beat beaten, fast, handles like it is on rails, good on gas (15 mpg), easy to work on,, fun to work on, extremely reliable, to this day looks sweet (in fact i like its looks much better than any of the new sleds), you can mod the hell out of it if you want. I enjoy the sled so much I recently bought another 2000 SRX!!! There are a lot of them out there for sale and you can get a sweet sled for $2500 to $3500. I have 11500 absoultely trouble-free miles on my SRX.

rx1jim..that is great that your SRX has that many miles on it and is still going strong. That is what I like to hear. These SRX's are fast enough for me.My wife's uncles who has an 03 RX1 is telling me stories of guys with Apex's and turbo's and are doing 145mph in the first 500 feet. These guys are strictly into hard core racing or drags. They get off on the high speed thing, and they must have a lot of money to dump into them sleds.Hey power to them.He was even thinking of putting a turbo in his RX1.
Hey I just ride locally here, mostly on the river, and if I can hit 120 mph on an SRX,I am happy enough.I am not racing guys for money or anything.Just enjoying the rush on my SRX.And you are right, them SRX`s still look good.Got my 01 SRX600 for ditch banging and hillclimbing,it has been totally re-done from scratch. It is like a brand new sled.Basically did the same to the SRX.I like to find a sled to fix up,gives me something to do.I am working on a vintage Artic Cat(I know it isn`t a Yamaha)..but Got it from my wife`s uncle,it is in great shape with only 2800 original miles. It is a 76 Pantera5000.Got a newly re-built motor for it already.Seat, track, hood is in mint shape.Re-built the clutches, cleaned up the entire motor area, bearings are still good on it.Just want to get it going for the hell of it,to know that I can re-store it back to perfect running condition.Besides it is super light, and when gas hits $7-10 a gallon,it will be cheap to run and can still do about 80mph with it.May take it to a vintage sled show or club one day.
When I retire,I would like to search for some older sleds, mostly Yamaha, and bring them back to life again.I love to do that and when it is all finished,I feel good.My little hobby in life I guess.

i think a lot of the corning is in the rider. just depends on how crazy you want to get. i have ridden both the apen and i own a 01 srx. i think if you got used to the apex it would handle almost just as good, but the comforbility isnt even a ?. apex is way smoother riding and feels better.

Still you got to love that SRX!!!!
the apex is awsome, i have a 06, and it have awsome power, on lakes i kill srxes from start to finnish, but lost to one in a 660 dragrace, the srx sits awsome ont the start tracks! very good racing suspension, but for riding trails it not that good.. i have had 5 srxes so i do like them and have had a lot of fun riding them, but apex takes it to the next level! as for cornering, sit forward allmost on the gas tank of the apex and it corners very good!

raced a heel clickered SRX, piped viper, and stock Apex. at the same time one year. all had 1 1/4 ripsaws and rider weight varied by about 20-30 lbs. It was probably a 150-200 yd run. it was SRX, Viper 1-2 lengths behind, then apex about 4 lengths behind viper. I'm sure the apex could have caught up on a lake or something but not on a shorter run. I also think the SRX is still untouchable in the twisties, but not by much probably, it would come down to riding abilities between the 3.

i must say my 2 cents , the srx has history of its own , it is a flat out racer period and still has the better looks of all sleds, well we all know what a racer,s best advantage is flat out cornering at high speed with ease, the apex is by far better rider comfort, but is more top heavy and can not hold in to the tight corners like the srx which is slung low and wide and if some one has a srx that does not corner then its not set up properley. i have rode a tripple piped sxr on a week end run and had great fun with it and was never sore from riding or beat up, it rides with ease and in the bush riding trails into tight corners handles like a dream. i will say this when it comes 2 trailing arm verses wish bone for cornering trailing arm all the way. when it comes 2 the real hard hits then the wish bone is a better set up. thats my 2 cents

IN 660 ONLY, I WOULD SAY SRX IN A ROUTE BUT !! I HAVE SEEN SOME VERY FAST APPEX. THING THAT I MUST ADD, MOST OF THE REAL FAST APPEX WERE NOT NATURAL ASPIRATED. I THINK IN ALL OUT RACE TRIM, SRX. 3:16 (yammie tony)
