Hey guys,
I made a post last year talking about my stock 02 srx I just bought and I am now currently taking the motor completely out. First time I have done this, luckily I have a couple uncles who help me out. There's a hell of alot of oxidization taking place on all the aluminum parts. Anyone recomend a good cleaner? I tried a brass brush and it seems to be soft enough to clean without scratching. Just wondering if a solvent would help as well. I have a set-up for my clutch from one of the more respected people on this awsome site. I really dont know what it will achieve since this will be my first time tuning this clutch. Anyways, just thought I would ask you guys what you would run to achieve peak acceleration and top speed. My uncle is non stop razzing me about his 01 XC-SP 700. I guess his clutch is finely tuned. I need to show him who the real king of the lake is. Thanks guys bring on the snow!!

4.5 gram rivits in both clutch weight holes ( ie. replace lighter rivit for 4.5 in heel lcoation) - gets faster bottom end as engine shifts faster, but can keep up
white/white/white primary spring - raises engagement for launch
red ( stock) or green ( stiffer) secondary spring, wound to about 60 or 70 depending on yoru weight, and a 51/43 or 51/45 compound angle helix for secondary - this combination works with the heavier primary weights to shift appropriately on top end
verify engine alignment angle and center/center distance
bottom line - fine tune to maintain 8500 rpm on top end, over reving just goes slower.
you can play with variation of the clutch weights, even the spring windup to get those rpms at 8500

your sled bone stock will beat your uncles pos polartrash! what clutch combo were you given? what helix, springs, and weights?
the w/w/w/ pri spring, green sec spring, and 51/43 helix....that's a common/popular clutch setup from guys on here.

Guys,
I was hooked up with this set-up . white white white striped yamaha primary spring 4.5 rivets in the stock fly weights. 51/43 helix with a green yamaha secondary spring set at 70 degree twist. im gonna give er a go and see what happens. Im confident this set up will be what im looking for. Thanks for your input.

the only concession I had to make was going to a 51/45 helix because the 43 finish angle kept me a little over revved. weight, conditions, clutch alignment all make a difference. bottom line, start with this proven formula then adjust from there to get to 8500 rpm and you will be happy.

haha hey tomseal6, thanks again for that set up! I got the entire set up from you last year and im gonna make sure those washers are in place. Im pumped. it ran SWEET when I first rode it late last season, it would rev right up to 8500 and just haul. Hopefully that aspect stays the same i just hope im not gettin greedy here.

ya for sure. very nice sleds by the way vintage srx. i just picked up a shop, service and repair manual. its a cd rom and I just got it in the mail today off of ebay. Also, I need to find that clutch set up that I spoke of above. Royal distributing sell all the parts im looking for? or would it b better to buy it off of say, Mr.Viper. I've just seen some people saying he has good deals on the stuff etc etc. Im anxious to get set up. My uncles sled is getting shipped down in about 4 weeks and I really want to make sure my sled is ready to teach him a lesson. haha not only that i just want er ready to rock. thanks guys
Did you have any DCS issues last season? DCS going off alot on wide open throttle pulls? where is cambridge?
Thats the only issue that i will fix this winter.

you know what, I did a few times have some issues. that was frustrating. I dont know why that was happening. the power valves are fairly dirty. i pulled them off a couple weeks ago and one cable actually pulled right out of the slot it sits in. that little lead sinker on the end of the cable that goes into the valve came out. so I assume I will be replacing that one. it was the middle cylinder. also, mag side cyclinder was not firing prior to me taking the engine out. there was gas, spark......not sure why that was happening. alot of my electrical connections were pretty dirty. greenish residue on some and for the most part they were dirty as can be. so its kinda of hard for me to pin point why that was. I figured it could be the power valves, bad connection somewhere etc etc. I ran it a few times on the grass this summer. cold days I would do two quick 8th of a mile blasts and shut er down to cool. I never let the heat exchangers get too hot because I was always feeling how hot they got after my runs. maybe just carbon build up on that cylinder, im not sure. what do u think? cambridge is in southern ontario. Thanks.
Is your motor stock?
They ran leaner jets in 02 because the DCS is on there.
If your motor is stock, I would jet 1 size up 148.8 PTO 147.5 center and mag. The gas is crappy these days and I think it needs a little more fuel than stock by going 1 size up.
The tripple v max motors are completely the opposite LOL you could drop a jet size on the red top tripples and lower the needle 1 clip position.
Try running a half bottle of octane 104+ in the black bottle with every fill-up of premium gas. Should take care of it.
Let me know how it turns out Tom

hey guys im also looking for these clutch parts -combination you spoke of.any recomandation on where to get it?also what would you say about the amount of horsepower you have to add to a sled before its really noticable?for the average trail rider is 10hp worth 4-500 bucks?

For $550 bucks I had my cylinders trail ported (15hp) this really woke the SRX up, worth every penny.

yes.. you will actually get slightly more than 10 from a trail port.

If your only firing on 2 cyl, check your reeds on the one that not firing. It took me a long time to figure it out on my old 99 srx, i new there was gas and spark, i took the cyl's off the pistons looked good. I took my carbs off to clean them and that when i noticed one of the reed petals were gone. You can even tell starting the sled up it sounds like it runs on 2 cylinders.

Hey guys i was wondering who does the porting on the site here?
Thanks,
~Chris
Also with the porting and the extra 10-15hp how would that affect my stock clutching? I am looking to upgrade the clutching and was wondering if i could clutch for a little more top end while retaining the acceleration with the little extra power?
Thanks,
