Were all cylinders marked 8G9 from 78 - 80. My 78, 79, and 80 all have 8G9 cylinders. Other people that have 79's and 80's have 8G9's also.

The early '78's came out with small cylinder studs. Otherwise, not that I know of. Did you know that except for the intake port, '76 cylinders are the same as '78-'80?

I HAD A 78 SRX THAT HAD LARGE CYLINDER STUDS. I ALSO HAD ONE THAT HAD SMALL. AND NO THEY WERE NOT CHANGED. I BOUGHT THIS SLED FROM ORIGINAL OWNER WHO WAS A FAMILY MEMBER. THERE IS ALSO FOLKLORE THAT THE 78 SRX CAME WITH DUAL RING PISTONS. I NEVER SAW THAT. BUT COULD BE POSSIBLE.
78 , 79 80 SRX ALL USED 8G9 CYLS.
78 SRX USED 8G9 HEADS WHICH WERE 1/2 cc SMALLER THAN THE 8JO HEADS USED ON 79/80 SRX. PIPES WERE ALL THE SAME. 78 SRX USED SMALL FRONT BUMPER LIKE 76-77 SRX. 79-80 USED WRAP AROUND LIKE GPX. 78-79 USED SAME CARBS .36 MM , 80 switched to butterfly.
THERE WERE NO DEFFERENCE IN 78-79 SRX CRANKSHAFT. BOTH WERE UPDATED FROM DEALER FOR HARMONIC BALANCER . 3:16 (yammie tony)

Good catch on the pistons Yammie. He was only asking about the bottom ends but the early '78's did come with 2 ring pistons.

8G9 heads

So will the 8G9 heads fit on a 79 motor. What do you have to do to make them fit.

THEY WILL WORK GREAT ON A 79 AND 80 SRX. LIKE I SAID THEY ARE 1/2 cc SMALLER SO THEY WILL RAISE COMPRESSION SLIGHTLY. NOW. THEY WON,T BOLT ON IF THE 78 SRX THESE CAME OFF OF USED SMALL ENGINE STUDS. YOU THAN MUST OPEN STUD HOLES UP TO FIT LARGER STUDS. 3:16 (yammie tony)
