Weak Steering Posts On SRX's

Wasnt there a certain year(98 Im thinking) of SRX's that had weaker steering post then newer year SRX's? I thought I remember reading a few guys having issues with there steering post breaking. Im putting a 8in. riser on 1 of my SRX's and if I can prevent an issue id like to. Any info is welcome
 
I'm pretty sure with an 8 inch riser I could snap mine like a dry tree branch. I drove a rod inside mine and plug welded it, along with some reinforcing on the outside.

Yea I got mine installed and was putting forward and backward pressure on the bars and the flex of the post was way past my likings. That was also at a stand still, so I imagine riding the flex would be alot worse causing it to break.

Brett...if this is on my old sled you really need to address some of your concerns to me since I built it. Not a lot was overlooked. You have a Viper steering post in my old SRX, it will not break. But 8" is a LOT!

I did the same thing on my 2000. I put a 3 in riser on it and ended up snapping the shaft. Although there were a couple rollovers before that too...lmao Just hope i dont hit something and take the bars in the legs! Done that before on other sleds and was glad the steering stem did break off!

I have an 01 srx and am planning to put at least a 3" block on my bars and maybe a piviot later on, is this something I should be worried about? I ride the he!! out of my sled and dont want to end up having to get towed home cuz my handle bars broke off. That would be just plain $h!tty.
 
if your going a few inches above stock and ride standing alot, you need to drive a slug in them to extend below the upper mount. they were not designed to stick a crowbar in and start bending it back and forth.

Are you talking about any year/model steering post with a riser? Cause like I mentioned before not knowing that Matt upgraded the post to a Viper post, it sure seem to me that it flexed alot when I put forward and backward pressure on it from a stand still. I know 8in of rise is alot but for standing up for me its perfect and from sitting with the Boss High Rise its not all that bad sitting and turning.
 
I havent looked at my sled yet but is the shaft actually hollow? What do I need to do to get that slug in there good enough so it will do what it needs to do.
 
yes the shaft is hollow. I never really looked at mine before it broke but i believe you can just slide a pc of bar from the top. You just want it to be long enough to go past the top brace as thats where they break. Then weld it in place.
