Looking at a 120 sled for my son, and wanted to make sure there was nothing to really look out for .... or look for - and what if any is good or bad about the cats vs the poo poos ....

120 sleds - anybody know good bad about different brands?

bought a new mini z in 99. second year of production, spring pre-order. the stupidest things went wrong, key breaks off(poor location), rotary kill switch needed taped off as the little hands kept turning it to off. choke cable broke, 4th ride, starter rope broke 6th ride. all this with a 5 year old and dad getting it going for him, all in the same season. no warranty on anything. next season, cheap *** drive chain broke, drive axle bearing went out,misc nuts, bolts, and screws fell out.and i seriously maintain my stuff! all this and no dealer support(note that this is a 5 yr old rider) i sure wish yamaha made one! went through 2 more kids after that and basically threw good money after bad to keep the damn thing running. this sled had about a 1/3 gallon tank, so your filling it up about every 15 min. no way it would go on a trail ride. these minis are designed for flat ground, packed snow only. not trying to burst your bubble, just my experience. the kids loved it!
I have a 2000 120xc for my kids . Bought it used 5 years ago. Replaced the brake lever once. No troubles other than that.

buddy has great luck with this polaris 120.

Thanks guys - I'm going to go with the Polaris 120 (yeeeichs!) Seems like a resonable price and I'm sure My 4 soon to be 5 year old will love it! Who knows .... a sno scoot could be in his future as well!
snow scoots are the best, second is a cat. they have working front and rear suspension and you can get them in pink if you have a girl.

I believe he just told ya, they have a better front and rear suspension. They also have alot better upgrades available, such as a front end widening kit.Ive seen some pretty bichin AC 120's out there, not so much for the poo or doo, not yet anyway. I sure wish yamaha would come out with a mini, maybe a mini srx or mini apex,now that would be major bichin. good luck in what ever you get,ive owned a poo 120,they are alright, only prob i had was the chain. Oh yeah i did the governor bypass thing and my son started ripping off the inner drive lugs,not sure what or how he did it though. Could just be an isolated condotion. Once again good luck.

the polaris as i remember has a harder seat and the front shocks were a joke, i had to push down with all my weight to get it to compress. the cat has a way better front end, very plush, real shocks, rear seat was very soft. the cat has many speed upgrades. i bought the second year mini z in 98 i think, it is still going, ive added plastic skis(a must) roller tensioner, about 4 new chains, a couple clutches, a couple drive gears, wheels on the side of the rails.
the best thing you can do is make up a hitch and hook up a really good plastic sled to the back of it, they fight over who is going to ride in the sled.

I have a 2004 prox 120 for the kids. Been great, no problems at all. The newer polaris have working coil over front and rear shocks. Polaris has a Robin brand engine which is a very good engine. That little sucker will even pull me around the yard through several inches of snow. Can't do that with the kitty cat we have though, that thing will only go on hardpack and will get stuck in about a inch of snow.

Spend the same amount of money & get a Sno-Scoot. Our boy loves his, & 35 mph is almost as fast as dads sleds!!

Agreed! Don't waste your money on a 120. Look for a Sno Scoot in decent shape and everyone will love it. The best mini sled ever built... mine is a '88 and will run circles around any 120.

My 5 year old nephew rode a then brand new 125 sno-sport around just fine, wasn't too much for him. Used to come on trail rides with us, it worked great. The only problem was in certain conditions the carb would ice and it wouldn't run.
I started a little 60lb girl on a 77 GS 340 and she was fine on it too. It's small, light, easy to handle, I know what I have and she still rides it at 13 and likes it. Not only that, if need be I can put an adult on it! I couldn't see putting that kind of money into a 120 for what they are. I think I'm into the GS for under a grand including the purchase price. I'd have to lean towards a Scoot or Bravo over any of the minis as well. Jr. has a '94 Kitty and I know it's a turd compaired to the 120 and Z but he already would rather ride his ATV on the river 'cause the Kitty is "too slow".
The Scoot is about the same size as his ATV and he handles it fine. The Kitty was fun when he was three but he'll be six in May and is already bored with it. The most fun he's had with it is filling it up with decals this summer.
Been thinking about unloading it. I'll sell you the Kitty at half the price of a 120.

One more to throw into the mix.....
My son, now 8, has been riding a 2002 Indy 340 for the last two years. Smaller chassis, light weight, and has the wider front end. A really great alternative to all the others! Don't waste your time on a 120. I bought the 340 new in '05 for $2500, but you can find a good used one for at least half that.
