have appox 5000 miles on 02 viper ,, yama/ring free oil 1st have of life and amsoil oil the rest of the mileage.. ck leak down last year on all cylinders and was at 8% to 10% ,, just wondering if i should run it 1 most season.. some people say 5k its time for rings and some say run it yamaha engine run for ever

its due, the rings are twice as cheap as replacing the pistons, once the rings get worn the skirt wears on the piston.

You will be fine!

I have 8000 miles on my viper and haven't even opened up the motor yet. I will run it until the compression drops and then I will rebuild it from the crank up :-). If you use good gas and oil, these engines should exceed 12000 miles before needing any work :-)

yep, that's very good oil. there's 2 srx's by me locally, that have pretty impressive odometer readings. 1 has 15,000 miles on it and the other has 23,000 miles on it. both engines have never been apart for anything and both will still pull 125psi on the comp testers. just your average yamaha quality. they ran nothing but yamalube all their lives, but if i owned them, i would be running either amsoil intercepter, or the amsoil dominator.

It's time,,,sure yammies run a long time but to keep it running tip top and
not to risk any $$ repairs that could happen get it done rings are cheap.

Try a leak down test.
With that many miles both of those sleds need pistons and rings. I would bet money the skirts are out of tollerance. It will make a nice mess when a skirt breaks and falls into the motor. I dont know why people are scared to re-ring these things every so often.
