How much HP did a 338 GP put out. Were the markings on the GP 338 motor stamped S338-****** on the motor. Were they single carb models. Any body know how many were made. Have a chance to pick one up along with a 76 340 exciter.
GP 338's were made in 73 only. I have no idea how many were produced, they made 32 Hp @ 6000 rpm with twin carbs and weighed 358 lbs, which was lighter than the 363 lb, 24 hp single carb 338. I don't know anything about the stampings. Good luck. G.
Picked up the 73 GP 338 today. Chassis # and engine # match. Seems to be all original. Hood is in perfect shape as is tunnel. Tunnel could use a little cleaning thats all. Bumpers front and rear also handle bars have no rust and are in super shape. Even the seat is not that bad a little dry checked. Has tool kit and tool box. The only thing that puzzles me is it is single carb with original air box. I thought they were twin carbs. I guess I was mistaken. Picked up this original 76 Exciter wich I am trying to remove old reg stickers. Both from the same 70 year old guy.
I think Yamaha had a update kit to switch the 73 GP338 over to a single carb. Originally they had twin carbs. Much more trail friendly with the single carb.
Very Nice 76 340 Exciter. I hope to find a mint 76 440 Exciter some day.
The 73 we have does have the twin carbs on it stock. The " S " motors had different porting then the " Y " Motors of that era. The Y motors came stock on all the SL models with the single carb on it. We had the 433's which were S motors and we found we could really make them run well by swapping the twin carbs out for the single carb. Real dependable that way too.
I found out that my GP was updated under warrenty in 73 because they couldn't ever keep the twin carbs synched. The single carb set up was a lot more trail friendly he told me.
Wow! Those sleds are in awesome shape! Body shop supply has a good adhesive remover for the registration stickers. As per other advice given elsewhere in this section, be careful running them and check all the seals first! Other than that, lubrication, lubrication, lubrication! Have fun. G.
These were both trail ridden last year. He drained all gas and put Marvel Mystery Oil down the cylinders. You know how the old timers are pretty good at taking care of things. I removed reg stickers from Exciter with no problem. Just a little paitence and heat gun with Goof Off. Now I will have to use some elbow grease on the tunnel. Once I am done with the exciter I am going to work on my 77 SRX then the 73 GP 338.
Here is a some pic's of the 76 Excier after a quick clean up. Still have ton's of cleaning left to do especially under the hood. But it is looking better already. I was lucky to find a original sled in this kind of shape.
Sled looks great. The 76's for Canada were not Exciters, they were called STX for 76 and 77 and didn't become Exciters until 78. Nor were they as attractive with the red and white, as the pic shows. At least I don't think so. Wish I could find one that good for my youngest, he'd love it. G.
