I am installing 5/16 studs in my 03 viper with a stock track. Is it better to buy a track cutter tool or can I use a 5/16 drill bit? Also what is the best way to drill the track, should I let the rear of the track down by removing the rear bolts or is there a better way?
 
i'd just buy a track drill, they sell for like 13 bucks at startinglineproducts.com, how many studs are you installing and are you using a pattern? best way to do it imo is to take the track out. thats a job and half though, if your tight on time just pull the skid out.
 
Just finished mine on the same sled!! The track drill is a must have. Makes it so much easier. I used an electric drill with a 1/2" socket and a 3/16" allen wrench and did it with the back end propped up with me on the ground. About three hours. Make sure to loosen the track and remove the belt to make it spin easy!!
 
I am going to buy the bit. I will not have the time to pull the track, I will try and prop it up and drill it. I made a template myself and will use that. I am using 96 up the middle.I live in Ma and travel to work in Pa and don't have the time so I am looking for the best and fastest way to do it. I have 2 03 vipers and I am sending one to the shop next week to check it out. It has 4000 miles on it and I just bought it so I want to make sure it is set up right. The one I am working on has 1800 miles and is all stock so it should be in pretty good shape. Thanks for your input.
 
The general rule i was told is... how ever many hp you have you should have close to the same amount of studs... your still gonna spin like crazy with 96. but it will get you moving on ice to a point.... Mine still spins with 192 studs, even on ice. not as bad as i make it sound.
 
Does anyone know about how much HP a 02 SRX has. I am putting a new track on and I also was aware of the 1 to 1 1/2 studs per HP.
 
I am going to think about it, I have some time as I ordered the track cutter.Thanks for you input. If I do run with 96 should they all go up the middle or should I put some on the outside? I see there is a ton of different pattens out there?

more is not always better i agree, more is actually worse if you think about it, your adding more weight, and with more weight comes more wear.. the faster your track spins the more the track will "flex" causing the upper shock mounts to rub on the inside of the track hence causing wear.

Do what you want, i was just throwing my input in there, track has been on for 2 seasons now and the wear is probably a 1 or 2 out of 10 being the worst.

it may sound like i have contradicted my self here but i agree, i'm not dissappointed with 192 studs, if you stud the out side of your track, they have a tendancy to rip out, and they can cause your idlers to wear (all of this over a longer period of time)

The good side to adding more studs is you strengthen your track by evening them out across the track,

I have 4 going across the track all the way around.

Th arguement of stud quantity has been covered over and over. Do a search and you will find out why more studs is not better. It is a misconception, and people continue to make the mistake that more is better.

Hey that's my thread! LOL! I've since added 120 mix of picks and studs, it hooks awesome now!
 
Thanks 98700 for that information. I am sticking with 96 up the middle in the v pattern and if I need to add more later I will. Thanks guys for the information.
