sounds like the pilots are getting dirty/plugged. take carbs off and clean out the pilot jets. also, blow compressed air thru all the passages in the carbs.

Look up carb cleaning 101 by MrViper, he walks through it with pics. It is down in the tech section, excellent walk-through.

I have the exact same problem?
I have the exact same problem, except mine can be hard to start from time to time. Let me know what you find. Sounds like a carb problem, funny thing is I cleaned them last fall and they weren't even dirty. Ran fine the whole winter and valua the problem pops up. Do you have ethonol fuel in the tank by any chance? I filled up on 10% enthonol since I couldn't get anything else, wondering if that is causing this?

Did the problem "pop" up last winter? Or do you mean its that way again this year? When sitting during the summer the gas evaporates and leaves gunk in the carbs, then you pull it until it starts and the "new" gas carries the gunk into the jets and passages and plugs them. A lot of it passes, but the tiny pilots end up plugged a lot of the time, which is your idle to quarter throttle circuit. MOST of the time, if it won't idle/run very well on the bottom end and the choke makes it better, your pilots are plugged or partially blocked.
By the way, carbs can look pretty clean but you have to be able to see the tiny round pin hole through the pilots or they are more than likely plugged. I've had to run a tiny wire into them to get them clean EVERY single time they've been plugged, spraying carb cleaner/air through them has never worked for me. A wire cut out of a wire brush works pretty good, as does the wire out of a bread tie. I've heard of welding tip cleaners being used, but you have to be very careful not to ream out the pilot to a bigger hole.
Make sure to watch your plugs when running ethanol, the manual recommends jetting up two sizes. I'm going to be in the same boat, I've been noticing that every single station around here has gone to ethanol. Here soon I'm going to drive around town and try to find one that still doesn't have it, what a PIA!
