Trail ridiing a Mountain Sled

I just looked at a '01 MM 700 and I'm wondering how well it would work as a trail sled. I just sold my two Vmax 600's and I'm looking for a replacement.

Should I change out the track for a 1.25" instead of the original 2"?

Will it have a severe "push" to the steering during trail riding?

I would appreciate your help.

Don't let trail riding on a mountain sled scare ya, they don't handle near as bad as the die hard short trackers would make you think. Sure, on the twistiest of trails it's gonna be harder but for the most part they still corner very well IMO. The added flotation if you like to ride off trail is awesome.

I would change to a 1.25 or 1.5" track, or cut the lugs down.

tomseal has(or had?) a Mtn. Apex that he used to ride on the trails and that was a 162"! He cut the lugs down too I remember.

I ride trails all the time with my sled.
 
I have rode Mtn Max's on trail with 1 1/2 and 2" both are fine other than they want to hook up in the middle of a turn. you will do fine if you don't want to race through the corners with a short track. When you get off the groomed trail you will have a ball.
 
Thanks for your input. The sled is so nice I hate to pass it up but I don't want to buy something that's not going to fit my needs. The sled only has 650 original miles on it and it's spotless......

Any trouble spots on the 2001 MM 700?

What about handling? My Vmax had a 42" ski stance and I think the MM is 39".
 
Excellent sled with no major issues, check for a water pump leak as thats one of the only things that I can think of.It just won't handle like a trail sled, but will have so many other good things such as way better ride from the bump bridging of the longer track and amazing traction.If your going to ride it in the eastern us I'd put a cobra or predator track on it, new more aggressive skis and look into widening the front end, I don't think it would be all that hard to do.If you end up getting it a good source for parts and advice on mountain sleds would Hartman out in Idaho, the owner Tom Hartman is super and has lots of experience in setting those up for the east and midwest.
 
It depends on how aggressive a trail rider you are, it will definitely push through the corners some. You have to have them pretty close to squared up out of the corner because they tend to pack the skis and go in a straight line once you throttle them again. A less aggressive track will help it to be able to slide the corners, but the narrow ski stance is going to make it have some ski lift also. My cousin swapped out front ends on his Mnt. SRX with a friend of his that had a Mnt. Max. He wanted a narrower stance for side-hilling, and the Mnt. Max owner wanted more stability on the trails. You might be able to find someone willing to swap you if you ask around.

A less aggressive track, wider stance, and tighten down the limiter straps should help out a lot for you.

I agree 100%. Cut down the lugs on the current track or you will run the risk of burning thru slides quite rapidly. Also, you could add hyperfax's and a marginal snow wheel kit.
 
it will be fine, a 141 isnt that long anyhow. If you found it to be too tippy you could swap the front end parts to make it the 42" stance easy enough. Save the money and just cut the lugs to the desired length.

Or just leave it as is and do more boondocking than trail riding!!!

KG- I went from a 01 srx to 01 MM (stock) and love my MM. If you are going to trail ride with it you will like the ride being 141 compared to your short trackers. If you are going off trail you will amazed where you can go with it. After that you probably will forget about the trail riding. Good luck ;)!
 
It Can Be Done!!!!

Just get another track of the same length or just cut the lugs on the track you have down to 1 inch. Put some taller gears in. If you have 8 tooth drivers go to atleast a 24/38 but ideally 25/38. Larger 5.38 wheels in the entire skid with a set of low snow hyfax saver small wheel kit in the middle.

clutch the sled like a 121
 
My MTN Apex has a 162 X 15 X 1 arctic cat MTN track on it cut down to 1 inch.

24/38 gears and Attack clutching with 5.38 wheels all over and an extra shaft in the middle with 5.38 wheels to eliminate center hyfax wear.

ASK PRO116!!!!!!!!! I had 118 MPH on the speedometer last winter.. It fricken HAULS!!!!!!
