Starter Recoil Rope - Length, Diameter

well you can buy rope for 500 cc and under sleds, and 500 cc and up sleds, the smaller cc has a smaller diameter rope, and the larger cc has a larger diameter rope, as for length, put it in the starter and then just feed it out until you gets it out through the pull cord hole, and cut it off so it will be long enough for the pull cord handle.

What diameter of rope is needed? Can I just go to the hardware store and get it?
-Craig

i don't think i would trust Hardware Hank to give me the correct type of rope. I just replaced mine - bought it from the dealer and was suprised how tuff this stuff is compared to regular rope. It was pretty cheap too. I can't remember how much i used

i got some from my yammie dealer for about 24cents a foot got 7 feet so it was 2 dollars and some cents. strong too.

I recommend using the same rope Yamaha uses. I have had a lot of poor results with other rope including stuff designed for recoils on 500cc motors. I don't recall if it is a different size (metric) or not but it almost seems like it is. I can tell you from my experience that replacing it with the same type and size rope is the best choice.

How do you wind the recoil back up????? i need help...thanks guys
Easy to do if you follow the procedure in the service manual. Hard to do if you just wing it and don't happen to do it the prescribed way. Be sure to get the right number of preload winds to the spring.

Its easiest to do it this way.... turn out the recoil about 3 or 4 turns, hold it in that position by hand or clamp it, its alot of tension and may is hard to hold by and for a while.... Then feed rope through the hole inside out through the hole in the housing, pull it out enough and tie a double knot, then release the clamp or let go and let it wind the rope back up in the assembly, easy as hell... MRViper700 has a post on this somewhere i believe.
