has anyone ever stripped the tunnel on the 98 srxs ... i have a blue tunnel and the paint was getting scratched and not lookin good... so i decided to stip the paint and polish the allum... great idea skip!! i took air craft stripper and the paint started bubbling... so i scraped and scraped... if you wanna do this get about 5 cans of paint stripper and some copper brillow pads (so it doesn't scratch) and be sure to pick up about 1000 cans of elbo grease while your there... its is turning out really good but i have a little more to do tomarrow... what a job!! give me a minute and ill put up some pics...

I can sympathise!!

But, I found a "generic" brand of paint remover from the local NAPA worked better than the high priced aircraft paint remover etc.

Will be doing it again on my next project sled later this fall!!

Yes, lots of "elbow grease" is required for the polish job, but I think in the end, you will be happy. Here are some "progress pics" of my project from 2 years ago with my 94 Vmax4 ST

I think it turned out okay.

A word of caution, dont use too coarse grit of steel wool, otherwise, you will be rubbing-polishing forever to remove the scratches in the aluminum!
Been there....done that !!! :o|

Keep up the great work..it will look real nice when your done!! ;)!

You just purchased crappy paint stripper. I have done this a few times, and it does not take alot of work to strip the paint. For the entire tunnel, I only ended up using about 1/2 qt., if that, and the paint came off like butter.

For polishing, get yourself a 5" polishing pad and throw it on your hand grinder. It take a bit of time, but takes alot of the "elbow grease" out of it.

I just completed a 99 SRX using the same stripper as Valin,, it worked great!!

PS: Thanks Ryan I used a bit more than a 1/2 qt. but had to use little effort to remove the old paint..

2000SRX...what kind of clear did you use?? I am in the same process as everybody else here and was thinking about that after its polished.

What kind of polish is everybody using??

I found the Napa remover to work way better then the Aircraft stuff FYI!!

yea i picked up some napa suff today.... what a diffrence.... that tunnel came out like a mirror great job.... im going to try to use a power ball and see what happens

it seems to be doing the job ok i have 1 side done and no foam flyin off yet .. ill be putting some pics up tonight.... i just want a polish allum mirror will just get f@#$ed up we ride really hrad and up in the trees.... its going to be to slick as it is does anyone have a place to get the pads i could put back on there?? i want to put black on there the sled is going to be all flat black

DON'T BUY THE POWER BALL....WHAT A POS!! it just falls to pieces. $hitty foam. get yourself a fluffy polishing brush from flitz.

I used a power ball with mothers polish and it worked fine. And I polished it again this year and it is still together. Maybe you got a bad ball. :dunno:

The stripper Ryan lent me is called Mar Hyde TALSTRIPII
This stuff worked great!! I'll post a couple pics later but I found that it removed ALL the paint where the stripper I tried before left some very hard patches to remove..
Light sanding with 1000 and 2000 grit wet sand paper then rub down with zero grit steel wool and few drops of oil and I hardly needed the mothers polish. Very light polishing at the end, and it turned out great!!!
