So does anybody know why so many red head engines crack around the pull start? Has there been discussion about this? It is obviously a very common problem.

yes i would also like to know i have been hearing more and more guys having this problem should i replace my crank bearing now while my redhead is running strong

I would change the mag side bearing, even if it is running strong. Mine went out with no warning. Sure sucks replacing pistons, jugs and heads and having crank work done.

I agree 100%. I would have the update done also.

How is it that the replacing the bearing prevents the case from cracking?? I have an 01sxr700 could this happen to me?

No, the two are unrelated, however, AFTER you lose your mag side bearing on a 97 sx, you will find the cracks as you pull the engine apart! The 97 sx had a problem with a lack of oil getting to the mag side bearing. It was corrected later. Your 01 is ok.

I have no idea what causes the cracks in the cases, but THAT problem is not limited to just the 97's. I have a newer block that has cracks, too.

I have a 99 sx 600, and it looks good with 5000 miles, but I will maybe work on it next summer....Did the 99's have this issue also...?

By the way how is that crank and case I sent you.....? Looks like brand new doesn't ?

also, they had a crappy little ball bearing, like polaris uses. in '98 they went to the nice large roller bearing. also, the oiling groove got changed i believe.

Do you have to change the bearing if you take the motor apart?...Is it ok to still run the old style?

Yes . You have to take the crank out and press off the bearings.
Its still OK to run the old style but a little work and you have the new style in and you do not have to change it in the next 2000 miles or so
