Yeah no my plan is buying two, for me the nicer srx700 and for her maybe a different brand 500/600 since the yami's don't seem so hot on gas.
Although I'm looking at a package deal right now that has a 1994 vmax 4 750 piped, 1995 vmax 600 twin double up with reverse.
So it's just the 500&600 twins that are hard on gas? I thought I've seen some vmax 500&600 triples? Was such an engine made? What about the powervalve vs. the non-powervalve engines? Any difference in gas mpg? Thanks this board has been the friendly-est so far vs. the other snowmobile makes boards.

There were 98 & 99 SRX 600 triples. Also from 2000 on up to the end of the 2 strokes, all 600s that I can think of were triples. I have no personal experience with these but as far as I have heard they all got decent mileage. No 500 triples were made.

Untrue, only if your twin is poorly tuned. I see on average 12mpg with my '95 600 Vmax, get as much as 14mpg and rarely drop below 11mpg. Depends on temp and how hard I ride.

You dont want to buy anything with aftermarket exhaust on it! NY has strict laws on altered exhaust and you WILL get a ticket. The edge suspension in an srx is an awesome setup! I myself wouldnt go any older than a 97 yamaha but thats just my opinion. And unless you enjoy wrenching on sleds i would stay away from anything with a mod motor in it. Stay away from the doo 800`s unless you want to put a crank in it.

I would fully agree with you.
Our smart carbed 600 twin 1997 venture gets 9mpg or so at best. It is a far cry from the 14-16mpg that the XCR got that the venture replaces, or the XC600 VES I have.
Seriously, if you are looking at other brands, the 600 VES polaris twins (2000 and up) are the way to go. My 2000 XC600SP is a pull and go sled from day one when I bought it. Plus it flat out hauls and gets great mpg. I have yet to find a 700 that is even close to stock that can beat it.

hmmm okay, all make sense. so is the '02-03 Viper Sx's as good as the SRX700's? Or are the Viper single exhaust and down on power. I thought I read somewhere the Viper came with a a longer travel suspension...

yes viper has 11.5 inches of travel ...srx has 8 inches .....buy a srx and and swap shocks from a viper and you have 11.5 inches of travel ....riding alone is no good i started like that and didnt ride nowere near as much as i do now ...thats why i have 3 srx`s and one sx ....just in case 3 of my buddies want to ride with me ....lol....and in case i break one i have extras to ride ...last year i broke 2 sleds......so i took that one home pushed it in the garage and jumped on another one and away i went ....get your wife a sled ..and when she dont want to ride i am sure you can find a friend to fill the seat .....

Ahh I got you, I found a Viper local I can afford, is the power that much different because of the exhuast on the SRX vs. Viper? Which one has the "powervalve"?
I'm assuming you can add a tripple exhaust to the viper to make it faster...

Both the viper and the srx are powervalve motors. The srx is tripple/tripple from the factory and the viper is a tripple/single. The viper can have tripples added to it. It seems that it hurts the mileage significantly and some have problems with cooling/overheating/burn down after piping the viper. The viper run a hotter timing curve which appears to account for some of these issues.
700 srx is about 140ish hp and the viper is around the 120ish mark so there is a hp difference.

Hmm, so would it be better to get an 01 SRX and swap the longer travel viper suspension in it or better yet a M10 skid?
What was yamaha's top hp sled in '02 and 03?
Thanks for all the responses everyone!

I would definitely get a SRX and long travel it before you were to boost the power on a viper to SRX levels. FWIW, you don't need top swap the whole suspension out on the SRX, it is much easier and less $$ than that.
Yami's top sled in 02 was the srx, and in 03, the RX1. IIRC, there was no 03 SRX, as they dropped it in favor of the rx1 four stroke in 03.
The SRX made 140 hp, and the 03 RX1 145....

02 the flagship was the srx. 03 was the the first year of the rx-1 and they were supposed to be about 140 also. No srx in 03.
My personal ride right now is an srx. Started life as a 99 600. As it sits now it's a 780 with the long travel front end and a holz coil-over rear. Spinning a 2"x144" track. For the way I ride it works great.
