hey guys looking at buying my first sled. I've ridden a few friends sleds before (firecats, mxzs, rev's, and zr's but never a yamaha) I've got my sights set on a 97 700 triple sx with the red color scheme. I'm currently unaware of the miles as im waiting for the seller to return my call. His asking price is 1200$. Any tips for a first time sled buyer on what to look for when i go to check it out? I was thinkign that if everything checked out ok such as the track and stuff offereing him maybe 1000 and seeing what he says. If he wasnt willing to budge and everything was in good shape do you guys think 1200 is a good deal?

$1200 seems like a fair price for a running sled $1000 is even better. I would try to bargan $900 give the seller room to negotiate. I have the same sled but in the 600 twin. I only have 2200 mi on it and it is like new. I was offered $1500 end of last season. But theses sleds are worth there weight in gold. I would never sell mine but that's just me. Good luck!

The first thing you should check is the w-arm in the rear suspension for cracks. Do a search on this site and you will know what to look for. Like I said, instead of wasting money on that old suspension, I'd upgrade to a long travel from a Viper. Also, test for play in the steering and check down by your feet where the trailing arms mount to the tunnel. Look for loose rivets.

Look at the case near the recoil for any cracks.From what ive read on here the 97 had an issue with the outer crank bearings.The problem was fixed in 98.You could probably find a decent sxr in the same price range.
yea its funny this is the 3rd year in a row that i have my 97 sx 700 for sale and i always seem to find a good reason to not sell it it is on craigslist for 1100$ buffalo ny but i would have to laugh at 900 bucks 1100 firm
I am very happy with my 700 SX and after 10 years and almost 15000km I am in no hurry to replace it. I agree with considering a suspension upgrade if you get it but would not be in too much of a hurry to part with your cash. As someone else said, you might be able to find a newer sled in/close to that price. 
yeah i wouldnt be looking to upgrade much, such as the suspension or anything. im still young (17 years old) and can take a beating. The reason this sled interests me is because i Sold my kx 125 mx bike and decided it would be something exciting to do all winter. Im pretty mechanically inclined so I can take care of alot of maintainence things myself. If i was looking to ride mostly the groomed trails of tug hill and old forge would this sled be a bad idea? also the seller said it needs knew carbides, how much should i expect to pay for those, 75 dollar range?

Pm Yamyrider and ask him how much he wants for his sxr skid and his aeen pipes , remember cdn $$$ now 20% , and the only disapointment there will be is your friends , who wont keep up!!!!!!!!!!! bolt on 130hp+....
I currently have 2 97 700 SX's and love them both. The short track we have currently has the motor apart for new pistons and rings for the first time after 7400 miles. But like everyone else said check the W arm for cracks and the trailing arm mounts for loose rivets. Other than that it's a great sled and I doubt I'll ever sell mine. I still get a giant smile on my face when I ride that sled even after I've been riding the Viper all day.

I bought a 98 last year, you won't be disappointed. $1200 in a fair price. Corners and rides very well for an older sled. My polaris buddies are all jealous!
