Does anyone know what the compression should be on a 84 V-Max 540 ??

depends soley upon the guage and thread adaptor used but 115-120# would be close, more importantly that they both show the same from side to side. if a long hose,wrong(short) thread adaptor is used your reading will be lower, however not "wrong" it all comes down to the tester being used.
My tester has a hose about 18" long. I'm getting around 108 pto and 112 mag. Sled has about 2400 miles on it. Maybe it's time for freshen up ?? I've had the sled for about 2-years and it's really clean but haven't ridden it. Needed a lighting coil and a primary clutch which I've finally gotten done. I think I'll just ride it and see how it runs. It's a twin to my first "modern era" sled from back in the day.... Came off a 73 GP 292 back in 87 and then it felt like an absolute rocket...! Nice to have your "first sled" again.... Thanks for all the input.... Howie

Very, very important on the 540 to keep the top end fresh especially, with the chrome bore you don't want a scored cylinder or worse. Most I have checked were in the 115-135 lbs range. Visit http://www.vintagevmax.com/
