Well the viper's got about 5300 miles on it now and I'm gonna freshen up the rings--and pistons if they need it. I was hoping to get it trail ported by Mrviper while I have it apart but I really don't have the extra $$ right now and it's probably too late in the season anyways. I've done a few small engines before, but do you guys have any tips for me-- what to do or not to do? Anything else I should do while I'm in there? I was thinking of putting in new reeds too, and maybe peeling a layer of head gasket. I've been running Blue Marble for the past few thousand miles, so hopefully it's in good shape. Ding said his motor was real clean with not much wear after using BM, and I think he said it had like 9,000 miles.

Mil, What's your compression? I don't beleave in tearing into somthing if it doesn't need it. I have 12,700 miles on mine and was freshend up two seasons ago. My compression checked out ok again this year 120/120/110. 110 is the pto side ( I guess this is offset on purpose) read it here couple weeks ago. Good luck

Ya, I hear ya bullet- but if I do it now it'll probably be just rings- pistons will probably be ok, and some are saying re-ring every 3,000. Just checked compression and it was 108,112, and 95 pto with a cold motor. Plus I'll be halfway there once I take the carbs off to clean them and the powervalves/ exhaust out to clean and adjust them.

Not sure what type of compression tester you are using, but that seems a little low. I haven't checked mine lately and I am going to re-ring it being it has around 5700 miles on it......but when the motor was relatively fresh it had 127/136/136 approx. My father's Viper is slightly better than that. I have two compression testers, one being an old one that my dad has had in our shop for years and another one that I bought from HIPERF engineeering. I think that one is still in their catalog.

Ya- I held it open just didn't have time to warm it up this morning before work. I'm gonna warm it and test it again before I tear it apart, and then re-check it after rebuilding to see the difference.

i did pistons (didnt even need them, they mic out fine) rings, bearings and clips at 11,000 mi on my 02 viper, and got about 3-4 psi higher per cyl. certainly not significant but a slight gain. have ran 2-s since day one. many on here feel a re-ring every 3k is a must but this is just my experience. obviously there are different scenarios for differnt folks but at ~6000 you could prolly benefit from a rering. i wouldnt worry about the reeds (unless they look damaged). i would peel the head gasket it makes a noticable difference in throttle response and "snappy" feel just make sure you run premium (i run yamaha octane boost as well).

How many layers of gasket are there? or is it one solid gasket? How much do i take away?

Only steel gasket you have on the top end of a SRX is the base gasket and that only 1 layer. The head gaskets on a SRX are orings, so the only way to raise the compression is to machine the heads. I know you have a SRX so I didnt know if you were thinking of you doing it of your SRX or someone else's Viper. Viper head gasket has 3 layers.

When I peel one layer, it's the middle layer-right? Do I need to put any sealant of any kind on the other layers whe re-assembling? Also just noticed my Y-pipe has finally cracked in a couple spots-- can that be welded or brazed, or just get another one? Or should I just find some Viper to SRX manifolds and put SRX pipes on now?lol

yes, middle layer is the one to get tossed. some like to spray on some high tack (made by permatex and in airosol can). you can have the cracks in your manifold welded. if you want to get a new one, i have a complete exhaust system from a viper, in great shape, w/only 1700 miles on it. if you want to do the srx pipes, i have a set of 700 srx pipes with manifolds as well. you will need to modify the stock srx flanges, cause they don't bolt up to the viper cylinders.

Thanks Mopar-- I wanted to ask Concept Carbon or Betheviper a couple questions about the pipe conversion first. I read that CC put in an SRX chaincase, and I have reverse in my viper-- not sure I want to part with reverse, and, don't they need to be pipes from a 98 srx? If I did the conversion I'd probably see if CC would make me a set of his custom flanges.

my pipes are from a '98 srx. i see the part #'s are different from the '98 srx pipes, to the '99-'02 srx pipes. does anybody know what the difference is?

The 98/99 year srx use small dounuts to mount pipe to muffler.

I wouldnt peel the gasket in a viper, already has plenty of compression for todays lousy quality fuel.
