Need some help here:

I am switching tracks on my 1999 SRX, and I noticed the same thing on my 1998 when I switched tracks.

The 2 chaincase bearings that are for the drive shaft and for the jackshaft, only have 1 seal which faces the inside of the cain case (Oil side) the unsealed side of the bearings face the tunnel, and there is a air gap, and then a seal that rides on a sleeve on the shaft.

My question is why don't they use double sealed bearings, and is there a reason not to, has anyone else noticed this?

2nd question, what kind of lube do you guys recommend in your chain case?

Thanks

i use amsoil synthetic gear lube. i think its 75w-80, or something like that.

i forgot to add that this stuff like doesn't break down. after 1 season of using it, you go to change it and it still runs out in gold color...looks like you just dumped it in. i'm very impressed w/the stuff. just make sure to pull the chaincase cover off after draining oil, to clean out all the old black oil w/brake cleaner.

Are you able to post some pics...I taught they were seal to the open air & open to the oil side...
No, the seal goes toward the chain case, you don't want gearlube with metal debris in your bearings.

I actually found the answer from reading a bunch more posts. Apparently the reason for the 1 seal is to allow gear lube seepage through the bearing to the seal on the jack shaft, and the drive shaft.

I am thinking that I am leaving both seals on my new $18 SKF bearings I am installing.

And it also looks like full synthetic gear lube is the recommendation.

Thanks

Yup seal to the oil side....

and as far as oil lots of different opinions on that one use anything from gear lube to ATF to motor oil even, anything would work, but i only use a full
synthetic gear 75w90 oil(Amsoil),what ever you pic stick with a full syn....

I agree, just filled it up with mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. same stuff I run in the race car.

The oil seal definitely faces the inside (oil side) of the chaincase. As someone else already said, the purpose of the oil seal is to keep metal contaminants which are generated by the gears and chain from getting into the bearings. No matter how good the lubication is, there will always be metal debris generated by the interaction of the chain with the chain with the gears Taking the oil seal out or installing the bearing with the unsealed side facing the chaincase is asking for premature bearing failure. At the beginning of every season, I open the chaincase and flush out the accumulated meatal debris using a light spray oil like WD40. The light oil acts as a solvent. I go a bit overboard with maintenance on my sleds so I change the chaincase oil a couple of times each season. Never had a bearing failure in over 30,000 miles of riding. I always use either Amsoil or Spectro full synthetic chaincase oil.
