Viper using too much oil

We received about 15 inches of snow last week-end so I was able to put ~200 mi on my viper. I purchased the sled over the summer so this was my first chance to ride. Seems like it's using too much oil...when I looked at the oil pump cable adjustment I found the cable had pulled out from the crimp on the pump side of the adjustment and lodged at an angle.

2 questions
1. Would this cause more oil usage, seems like it would?
2. Any ideas how to fix, of course the cable won't slide completely back in the crimp although I did force it back in some then set the adj at 20mm.

It rained most of the day yesterday so the snow is just about gone...

I'll measure oil usage closer next time I get a chance to ride, I read on another post that I should use around a quart for a tank of gas.

BTW...awsome sled so far

It was sweet and very unusual as I'm far enough from Lake Erie that the lake effect typically tapers off before reaching me...by Sunday the ground was frozen pretty well also.

Yeah, That's why you went through so much oil. I had the same problem on my srx last year. I thought the oil pump was shot I was using so much oil. The cable on mine was pulled out because I had it routed incorrectly Over my air box.

welcome to TY...

yes that would make it use more oil for sure i would get a new cable if it
were me could do it again and i don't think there too costly.

right around 1 qt to a gal is close yes.

for a 12 gal tank,

1 gal = 128 oz. 1 qt = 32 oz.
12 gal = 1536 oz

If you want 50:1, then 1536/50 = 31. You should burn 31 oz of oil per 1536 oz (12 gal) of gas.

31/32 = .9 -- 31 oz = 90% of a quart.

If you burn exactly 1 quart of oil per tank of gas, you're running 48:1 fuel ratio. (1536/32 = 48 ) 48:1, almost 50:1, real close.

i wouldn't go any leaner then 50:1,for a viper i'd stick with 40...

Also you may want to do these checks.....

in this order;

1st- set idle to 16- 1,7000 rpm's(@ operating temp)

2nd- set throttle end play to 2mm(adjustment for that is down at the carb rack)

3rd- set oil pump cable free play here and here to 20(richer)to 21.5(leaner)mm

then set choke anytime to 1.5mm
