Looking for a cabin in the UP to rent...

I think i was nominated/drafted to put together our trip to the UP this year. We usually go late February. We've been in a cabin/cottage the last 2 years and that has worked out well versus the hotel rooms. Not that we're against that. We usually go Mid-UP. We've stayed as far west as Munising and as fast east as Trout Lake.

So I'm looking for suggestions and contacts of places that have good trail access and accomodations. We usually have 6-8 guys (been up to 10-12) but I'm guessing in the 6-8 again this year. We come back and play cards and hang out so the cabins/cottage thing with a nice area to congregate is cool.

So let's hear some suggestions....
 
cabins

try yogiscabins just outside trout lake. right on trail(sounds like the snowmobiles are comming through the cabin) about 50.00 a night

Usually a good place to find houses/cabins for rent by owners. Not a resort type place ... We have rented a few places off of there.

Depending how far north you want to go, the guy who runs the Melstrand General Store usually has a couple places for rent too.
 
Another option is the Brimley Casino which is a little west of the Soo. It's right on the big lake and there's trail access right there. Rates are pretty good the only thing it doesn't offer that a cabin does is a common area like a living room or kitchen. They do have a little pub/bar.
 
There is a coffee shop in MUNISING that the owner has a "cabin for rent" I forgot the name,,but,, I think it was very reasonable!!!!
 
dnale, why not do something different and goto ontario??? drive to wawa stay at the wawa motor inn (cabins or rooms whichever you prefer). or try this house for rent in dubreuilville http://forum.ontarioconditions.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2981 (you might have to register for ontario conditions to see the post)

lots of day rides on and off trail. great local people, great area to ride and LOTS OF SNOW, and low traffic on the trails. with the exchange rate at close to 25% makes it very affordable again to try this region.

way up there? same distance from ypsi to grand marais or munising in all reality. lot better snow ALOT less people (in ten years, i have never saw more than 15 sleds on the trail total in a days ride).

they do have speed limits set at 50kph (31mph) BUT it is just like driving the roads use your head ride for conditions and area you are in. around towns you slow down, out in the sticks you ride your controled pace. no different than speeding on the highway, your call, your risk (ticketwise). we ride with trail wardens, and they dont ride the 50 kph limit. not saying it is right or wrong. just saying. use your head ride safe and everything will be ok.

the trail permit is more money but for 1 trip, buy a 7 day pass. would you pay 100.00 to be guaranteed low traffic, and great snow and trail conditions? for me it is very worth it.

lots of mis-information out there on riding up there. you have to have an open mind. it's not WAY up there, it's not, that much more expensive, and the return can be alot better than riding here in my expirience. and the best thing, it is a new expirience, not the same old same old up or northern lower annual trip, it is an adventure.

to put it in perspective for you mileage wise... wawa is 2.25 hours north of sault ste marie which is 45 minutes north on the mackinac bridge. you could start in the soo but, i choose to drive the extra 150 miles in country to get away from the locals in the soo (100,000 population), snowtrain/tracks to trails riders, and tourists.

You make a good point (s) .... I may have some convincing to do. What are rates like? Any issues with trailering across the border? Insurance is needed right? I guess it looks far when you see that it's above Lake Superior. If it's about 3 hours from the bridge we may just have to leave Gaylord at 8 (instead of plan to leave at 8 and it's 9:30) till we do. Not all that much longer.
 
rates are reasonable. and out dollar is worth about 1.25 canuck funds. fuel is more expensive but, it is what it is. have to have registration, insurance and trail permit.

if you have guys that have dui's they wont get accross the border, (dont try it could ruin everyones trip). trailering accross is easy. dont bring extra beer, cigs or anything accross (you can buy them at the duty free store prior to crossing the border but you are only allowed so much per person, dont go over that limit, and know what you all bought). they are strict on bringing meats, fruits ect... only 5 extra gallons of fuel allowed for the whole auto. you can have the sleds and the truck full but only one 5 gallon can as extra. just bring your sleds, gear, tools. NO GUNS, dont worry about pocket knives but dont divuldge them unless they specifically ask about knives.

you dont need a passport to get across or back in until june. but you better carry your picture id (drivers license), AND a copy of your birth cirtificate at a minimum. if you have passports, that is the easiest way.

best bet is to answer the border partols questions, only what they ask, and provide no more info than they ask. know where your going, how long you plan to be there, and what is totally in the rig. only speak when spoken to, and tell everyone else in the truck to shut up, and only speak IF the border guard asks THEM a question. prevents confusion.

if you have more questions, just ask. like i said we ride there all the time. and with the fuel prices this way, i will be up there every other or every third weekend of the entire season. jan to april ski
 
Boy, Skidooboy has done this a couple times! He hit all the most important points. The DUI thing is probably the most important to worry about. We have a guy in our group that is no longer welcome in the US due to a ticket he got 20 years ago. You may get across a couple times without getting nabbed, but they'll get you eventually. No little white lies and not hiding anything goes a long way to insure a speedy crossing. Also keep in mind that the border agents have questions designed to trip you up in your story, so similar or repetitive questions are common.
 
We don't have any DUI's that I'm aware of. Granted I am not always aware of everyone's past.

How much are the speeding tickets if you or your group were to get one?
It's only common sense to slow down in traffic and towns etc but we do like to scoot pretty good when the trails allow.
 
New year, new destination....

This year I'm looking for something in the Trout Lake area (or Newberry). Probably last week in February or first week of March. The number of guys is still iffy. Looking at probably 10-12 maybe more. I know it's tough finding places that have enough beds for guys not to double up. That's how we'd prefer...(not doubled.) Last year we got spoiled by a big kitchen and a snorkle hot tub. Any suggestions or phone numbers of people to call?

I got lucky, some crazy SOB decided to sell his sled just cause he moved to Missouri. I haven't put up any pics with the low windshield on it. I know it's COLDER for sure. I might be getting old cause I might have to put that one back on.
