I picked up the primary puller bolt, and I had some pretty good torque on there....and with impact, but it doesn't want to budge.

its got 15K on it, and to my knowledge this is the first time it has been removed....or attempted that is

Any advice, tricks? Anything to watch out for?

Really, Mine came off quite easy after not being off and improperly torqued for VARIOUS seasons. Did you try the grease trick?

The grease method is by far the best, it makes a mess but gets the job done. If it still wont pop after that refill the hole with grease re tighten puller as tight as possible and lightly tap with a rubber mallot as you rotate the clutch. DO NOT USE A IMPACT FOR THIS PROCESS!!!!!!! It can cause more problems than good esp. if you bend your puller and get it stuck.

another trick!!

I had a stubborn clutch removal on the old 76 Artic Cat.Clutch must have been on for some 20 years plus.Had the impact on it,tapped it and nothing. Then I went to the freezer and got out one of those gel ice packs.Placed the pack in between the 2 sheaves around the center for a little bit. This will make the meatal shrink I was thinking. Then took the impact and the clutch came off in a second.I remembered the dealer telling me a story where they have trouble getting a flywheel off the shaft. They would have to stick the whole motor in a freezer for a few days and hopefully get the meatal to shrink enough that the puller would yank it off.I have broken a puller trying to get one off,and that using an impact and tapping at the same time. All you can do is try it.Good lick.

to save the clutch and not jam it up i would get a big pickel fork...
(the wedge fork) for ball joints.... just put the puller in fully tight and stick that in behind it and and a couple wacks should jar it loose

I would STRONGLY caution against using any hammer on the primary. or near it, If you miss and hit the primary it may not go so well. Aluminum bends/cracks very easy.

I hear ya

I just had a stubborn one on a viper I''m working on. I have a really good hard puller so I wasn't worried about breaking it. I have a pretty good impact gun that has easily gotten every other clutch off I have ever worked on. I just put a 3 foot piece of pipe on my breaker bar. Popped it right off!

Now, I'm not sure that's the recommended method but that's what worked just fine for me!

as for the heat gun, use the heat at the BACK of the primary where it sits on the shaft, is that what you mean?

as for freezer, it was -15 this morning, so Im sure its cold...LOL but I have a nice heat gun with tips, so should I direct the heat to the back of the primary?

nothing quite as powerfull as hydraulic pressure, keep inserting grease way down into the crank snout and run the puller in with impact gun, let it sit with the pressure on it, sometimes youll walk away start doing something else and then "pop". This method will remove it, just keep doing it.

heat the shaft between the sheves towards the inner one. have your puller bolt installed and tightened before you heat .dont put thr heat to the back side of the clutch because you could damage the crank seal.

aha, ok well, Ill go with the grease trick first and go from there. Heading to the shed tonight so, Ill know more later

I had one heck of a time removing mine last year, gave up & trailer to a local dealer...they used the impact gun & (damaged)two pullers & gave up...however they did not leave me stranded...down the road was a Farming Machine Shop, a real nice old chap, he has seen it all, so he tells me...what he did was put the sled on its side(clutch side up),pour 1oz of hydraulic fluid in the crank stub, then loaded the grease on top of it, then used my puller bolt with axle grease on the threads & zipped it with an impact gun...then set the sled down & put it outside...we went back inside for a coffee, exchange a few stories & yes I heard it "pop" through the shop door...went outside, it was off, a little messy...but off...he charged me $10 & he cleaned up all the grease on & in the primary...I was so happy, I gave him an extra $10...the old chap said if it weren't cold out, I have frozen bags of peas/corn to set in between the sheaves, that does the trick also...
So keep us informed...cheers
