Have An 2003 Viper. Stored For The Summer, Occasionally Started Up Monthly. When I Went To Get It Out Last Week, Will Only Run With Choke On Either 1st Or 2nd Notch. Changed Plugs, No Difference. Put Stabilizer In Fuel Before Summer And Added Fresh Gas When I Changed The Plugs As Welkl . Could Taurs Be Acting Up ? Dont Know If This Sled Has It? But I Noticed A Small Switch Close To The Idle Speed Adjustment. Other Than Taking To The Dealer Is There Something I Should Be Looking For ?
Cheers Werner

that happened to mine a few times and found it to be that the pilot jets were plugged up cleaned the carbs and all was fine. i put a fuel shut off in now and run the carbs dry before summer storage. it fired right up this winter with no probs except, i had to pull forever to get gas back to the carbs

Carbs will need to be cleaned. I've never had much luck with Sta-bil. You could try to run Sea-Foam in the gas and see if it will clean it out, but the right way would be to clean the carbs.

Do the yamaha engines have a fuel rain screw at the bottom of the cylinders like th Polaris? I remember when trailering the popo it used to flood the cylinders and you can drain the fuel at the bottom of crank case

like the other's said, just pull the carbs off and go through them, thats probably whats wrong,,we see these type of posts every season start..

The carbs have drain screws but they're next to impossible to get to unless you're double jointed. By the time you get to them, it's easier to just take the carbs off and clean them.

Primer for fuel

Is it easy to put a primer on the fuel system in order to cut down on the amount of pulling after you have drained the bowls? Anyone done it?

I would highly recommend you don't start it once a month.Yhe only thing your doing is causing moisture each time you start it.Also clean the air jets along with the pilots.

Ditto. Starting it periodically is one of the worst things you can do when a sled is stored. The moisture created just ends up making rust. I have heard that if you run it clear up to operating temperature the moisture will evaporate, but why bother? You just found out that it basically didn't help you out anyway, still going to have to pull the carbs and clean them. Might as well just fog it and forget it.

By the way there is a great write up by Mrviper on carb cleaning, with pics, once you do it you will be surprised how easy it is to do. It is down below this section in the tech area.

yeah I dont see why you wouldnt want to clean your carbs at the start of every season. Most cases they dont need it but why take the chnce of burning down your motor. In the spring put lots of stabil in the gas, i try to run it as close to empty as I can, and Fog the crap out of the motor with fogging oil till it wont hardly run. I usually take the airbox off when I do this, once that is done your carbs are pretty much ready to pop off in the fall when you should clean them. When you take the bowls off the carbs be careful not to round out the screw heads.

Try putting a teaspoon of mixed gas in each spark plug hole. She'll fire right up and pull the fuel back in. You may have to do it twice, but 2 pulls is better than 50!

Also - When you clean the carbs...Change the phillips headed bolts to allens. Makes it much easier the following year. If you do strip a phillips head, use vice grips to break it loose.

I cleaned my carbs on my 03 Viper per Mrvipers instructions and the sled runs great, one pull to start. I use the stable and fog for storage and dump the gas before first start, add fresh gas and plugs. I never start the sled during the summer.

Clean the carbs, take them out and take your time.

update

Took sled for a tunup. They also installed revse for me as well. You guys were all right. Carbs were gummed up. Pilots were plugged solid. HAd it out today for a quick ride in a field. With the 1.3 " track and 136 skid this thing hooks up like ther are 200 studs in iy. This is my first ride on a viper. HAda SRX 1999 3 years ago. Power feels similiar but suspension is way better.
Thanks for all the help
Cheers Werner

So far this year I have done 3 sleds with plugged pilot jets and am reading an abnormal amount of these issues on here. Anybody suspect the gas?
