97 VMAX 600 fuel/oil

:dunno: Seems my oil pump is more than a bit generous. I have played with the adjustments to no prevail. I have read that this is common when the pump fails. My question is If I just premix the gas will this clog the fuel filter in the tank and what adjustment would I need to make ?
 
Don't pre-mix,'97 had issues with the pumps,if you adjusted down some and
it's still way rich find a new/used pump and set to spec..good to go!!!
 
Yeah, you probably need a new oil pump.

Our 97 600 twin is in the shop right now. Our dealer previously told us that our particular sled would be covered under warranty, and now we are trying to make them stick to that. Even if they over the part, the labor, or even lets say 50 dollars off I would be more than happy. See if your dealer will cover it. They might.

The oil pump retails for 140 dollars or so.....

Our dealer is a little ignorant, not knowing yamaha has had a pretty widespread issue on these oil pumps, to the point that they changed the part # for 98, and if you try to look up the oil pump, you will see a superceded part. The original ones failed a lot, and they fail to put too much oil in. This particular dealer was not even around in 97, or 98 for that matter, so I don't expect them to know off the top of their head.
I think if I get 200 miles from a set of plugs before they foul out I am lucky. ps, my carbs have been cleaned, and the smart carbs work as they should.

It didn't get into the shop until the weekend after thanksgiving. That said, they are slammed at the moment, and I am trying to reason with them to at least knock a few $$ off of it, if not cover the entire deal. Their newest story that they told me that there have never been any problems with oil pumps on this year and motor, so I told them to look up on the fiche, and try to order the original part. I think I will call them again tomorrow and ask them why there are 2 part numbers, and the old one is superceded. For me it is the principle, I know I could have fixed it for less $$ and not much labor on my end, but when the guy tells me "bring it in, we will replace it for free if that sled did not yet receive the newer pump" I am going to try to make him honor it. If he won't, I sure as hell will make him feel bad for not doing as he says he would. To be honest, this may be the deciding factor if I "buy where you ride" like all the shops up north say, or whether I buy down here at Port Yamaha, or Glenn Curtiss Motorsports when those 2 dealers have good deals, and are very close to where I live. See our cottage is in Tomahawk, and I live north of Milwaukee. If that were not the case, then I don't think this would have taken so long to get this all ironed out.
 
Yeah I have talked to a couple dealers around me about the piston problem and the oil pump and they all just look at me weird. Like are you serious you want us to honor a recall on a 12 year old sled. I was thinking I would just try to contact yamaha directly and talk to them.

Why would it be a bad IDEA to premix?
 
Just got off the phone with yamaha. the service guy was great but when I asked him about recalls and discontinued parts due to service issues. he could not find anything atleast for my sled vin# I asked about the piston ring pin issue and the oil pump... So I was wondering if anyone had a service bulliton link or number I could referance to these issues?

Let me see if I have any of those numbers.

I am now dealing with customer relations to see what if anything can be done. We all realize that this is a 12 year old machine, but these issues should have been taken care of while they were under warranty. I know ours has been updated with different pistons in talking with the service manager. Now we need to simply address the mega oiling issue.
 
I did the same thing to my cussion 97 vx 600 just replaced the pump and it was fine. It would go through over half a quart to a 1/2 tank of gas. It just over all ran bad load up all the time.

i have a 1997 v max 600 xtc i noticed there are 2 lines on the pump housing and 1 line on the lever , does the line on the lever and the first line on the pump housing have to be lined up when the sled is at an idle ? do you set the adjustment with the cable?, if not could you tell me how to adjust the oil pump. :nos: thanks
 
Oil consumption

There is a gap to measure at the oil cable joint after you roll back the cover, and pull the two sleeve ends apart. The Vmax XTC use a fair amount of oil, the SX is a guzzler. Supposedly this was corrected on the '98 model.
