Lost the crank in my 02 Viper at the end of last season. Got around to tearing it down this past weekend. Center lower connecting rod bearing is gone. Also feels like to 2 bearings on either side of it are shot. Noticed the both end seals are also shot. Seems like a lack of oil in the entire engine. Oil tank was almost full. All the oil lines were full. Oil pump was full of oil. Sled has given me 5000 trouble free miles. Any suggestions where to start looking? Also, where can I buy a rebuilt crank? I'd like to just swap my crank for a rebuilt to reduce downtime.

did you fog the engine regularly before storage? I had my reeds out and peeked down into the crank and it was coated in oil from when I stored it last fall. That doesnt mean it wont go anytime, i have 5,600 miles on but I'm the 2nd owner, the prev. owner didnt fog so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I had a crank go out on an old SRV once, got a rebuilt one from Al's Snowmobile Salvage.

i have a friend that lost a crank a few yrs ago in a polaris 500.we tore it down,it appeared to be lack of oil due to severe blueing on the rod and main bearings.he sent the crank out and had it repaired.he bought a new oem oil pump and we reinstalled everything.150 miles later-same thing except other side!upon closer inspection and advice from a plaris guru we found the vent line from the oil tank had gotten pinched!expensive lesson learned.probly a once in a lifetime event, none the less i thought i would share this info.

another viper w/center rod bearing gone......this has become pretty common here.

lennstang, you can send your crank to:

Jeff @ Midwest Crank
Green Bay, WI
920-434-3630

this guy does the warranty work for yamaha, so he knows his stuff.

Did you lose compression in your cylinders? i think my bearings are going out on my SRX, ill be pulling it apart probably tonight, it still runs, but has a rattling noise at idle, but goes away at higher RPM's. I just want to know if thats what i need to expect with my sled.

How can you find out if its still under warranty?

from the motors ive seen loose cranks it just happens quick!my friend said on the polaris that he got a sqeal about 20 seconds before thw crank locked up!ive experienced the same thing with dirt bike motors.all seems fine, then suddenly it isnt!

the crank isn't going to be covered under yamaha's warranty anymore. lets say you bought a brand new '02 srx that was still in the crate. ok, you put 300 miles on it and the crank goes out. still within the 1yr warranty of the machine, so if you are within 1 of the 26 states that yamaha dealers send there warranty crank repair work, your '02 srx crank would end up at this guy. that's what i mean by doing yamaha's warranty work. he does yamaha's warranty work for 26 states. the yamaha dealers within these 26 states, send all their stuff to this guy. he also does crank work for non dealer people, like you or i. so, for you, your crank would come w/a 1yr warranty. see what i'm saying?

Did you happen to measure the gap of the oil cable before pulling it apart?
No, I did not measure...I will check it when I re-install the motor. I'll also verify the cable is pulling the pump arm when the throttle is depressed.

Great info! I'll have to check the vent line over the weekend. I'll keep you posted if I find anything. You could be right about the vent. This sled has been very reliable over the years. Maybe it developed a gradual kink from being mis routed at the factory.

If you got 5,000 miles truble free outa it then boom i suspect a summer storage error or oil pump malfuntion(supply),how are your cyl's any minor scoring??

The motor failed at the end of last season...not recently. I just parked it for the summer and took it out of storage this past month. I always fog my sleds when storing them(I have 5 total). I didn't bother fogging the Viper because it wasn't running when I stored it. I'm jsut trying to figure out why the engine seems to be dry of oil.

No signs of scoring in the other 2 cylinders...but the center is toast. Just looked over the pistons and crank....very dry. Not the usual oil residue you see in a healthy engine.

Ok so the center cyl is toast too, could have been oil supply,i think also
there is a oil line feeding the crank on a viper..liike on a srx..

Yes, I noticed when I pulled the crank that there are 2 oil lines feeding the crankcase. But they were both still full of oil. Almost acts like the oil pump either failed or wasn't pumping oil effectively. I have yet to check the oil system for any issues: kinked vent lines or broken cables, etc...
