Viper Crank Shot-Lack of Oil?

what was the freeplay in the oil pump cable set at? i like to run mine around .625". i don't care about cleaning the valves more often. i like the pump going to wide open sooner.

bet it ran like a champ the last time you rode... possible crank seals sucking in air ???

crank seals out won't make the center rod to get wipped out. the mag or pto side would be the ones to catch hell, if the seals were leaking.

Could bad crank seals cause the crankcase to be dry of oil. The PTO seal was OK. The Mag seal was totally shot. Is there a seal in the center between each of the outer cylinders?

what oil have you been running in it? yamalube? the reason I mention it is you wont find a oily film in a engine with yamalube, its burns very dry. I take apart engines daily and the yamalube engines are always dry looking. If you could post some pics of what you got there, I might be able to help further. Usually when the pumps fail they stick on full rich.

does the oiltank smell like fuel with the cap off?

No fuel smell in the oil tank. I've always ran 100% synthetic. I'll get some pics posted later.

Where can I get a rebuilt crank. Just want to exchange mine for one already to go. And I don't want tp pay the price for a new one.

lennstang, did you try this guy?

Jeff @ Midwest Crank
Green Bay, WI
920-434-3630

otherwise, what about bruce @ cbperformance?

Lennstang, who did you try to contact? I also had Jeff at MidWest Crank, rebuild a crank for me. Great service at a great price. He does seem to take more vacations than the average guy....so, maybe that's why you couldn't get ahold of him? Try him again on Monday. I know a while back he was having problems with his phone lines.

Center rod went on mine at 6000 mi.
Figure due too lack of oil.
There was a thread here a couple yrs.ago on this.
Most guys thought the same.
Bumped my oil feed since then,no loss in power.
Should consume approx.1 ltr. per 110mi. in which it wasn't.
So far so good.

Thanks for the all the info so far fellow Viper owners. I'll be calling Bruce @ CB Performance to get the crank shipped out!

Were You using 91 octane fuel?

I have over 8000 miles on my viper and no problems with the engine yet. I'm aiming to bet my doo with 17000 miles before it blew up :-). Hopefully it will make it :-)

I always thought my viper was a little too lean on oil, so I checked the cable freeplay the other day and it's supposed to be between 19.5 and 21.5mm, from what I read on one of Daman's post's, and sure enough, it was like 23.5mm (lean). So I set it at 20.5. Wonder if the oil cable stretches out after time?

I'm beginning to think I may have turned down the oil pump when I 1st bought this sled. This is what may have cause my crank issues. I've owned the sled since 03 and always turned down the oil pump on every sled prior to this one. Can't remember doing it but I'm thinking because of habit, I must have. Everything points to not enough oil. I do remember think that this sled didn't seem to use enough oil on trips. Being the wife's sled, I'll turn it up rich and just enjoy my 07 RTX's awesome engine and no need of oil injection!

IMO.......Vipers came from yamaha too damn lean,,i've must have re-adjusted 20 now(friends, family, buds, etc) because the owner complained it seemed like it was hardly using any oil and they were lean set. i readjust
to 20 to 21 in that area depending on usage and how pricy the oil is that
the owner is using.

how many old oil buring twins have you heard with crank problems?

so far have never heard anything back as far as crank failures..
