And here I was thinking I had a smokeless sled because of the Blue Marble oil!---Wrong!!

DAMAN, could you post pics, etc. of how to re-set the oil pump? Sucks, I'll have to wait till after a couple trips before I check it. would have been nice when I had my airbox and carbs out. o well, if she blows she blows.
You know I was thinking, and this may be absurd, but could a guy add a little pre-mix oil to his gas as an added form of lubrication? like a 75:1 ratio? or would the carbs not handle it with jetting etc.?

no you don't want to do any pre mixing adjusting the pump will be sufficient.clintondf said:DAMAN, could you post pics, etc. of how to re-set the oil pump? Do these checks in this order;
1st- set idle to 16- 1,7000 rpm's(@ operating temp)
2nd- set throttle end play to 2mm(adjustment for that is down at the carb rack)
3rd- set oil pump cable free play here and here to 19(richer)to 20.5(leaner)mm
then set choke anytime to 1.5mm

So you should measure from the adjusting collar to the cable sheath (pulling back the sheath and measuring the cable)? I have been trying to figure out the adjustment. I guess I should stick to flying airplanes I don't really understand this snowmachine wrenching.

Yes from the cable end to the long adjusting nut that you pull the cable from. Pull the rubber sheath back 1st so you can measure the from the metal end of the cable.

I checked my freeplay today and I am at 18mm. its on a viper. so I should be getting plenty of oil correct? factory is 20.5mm. I'm gonna do a consumption check this weekend to see how much oil/gas I am using.

He is still sweet talking it with EggNog.

Just got done re-assembling my Viper motor after loosing the crank as I posted above. After starting the 1st thing I checked was if the oil pump was pumping oil to the fuel pump. Guess what? No Oil was pumping out of the line. I bled the pump though the bleeder bypass and have plenty of oil getting to the pump. I know my oil pump input shaft is turning because I checked that when installing the pump/crank. Plus the coolant is circulating fine.(which is driven by the same shaft) Any ideas? I've never seen an oil injection pump fail. I'm going to pull it tomorrow and disassemble it to inspect it. I think I can get a used pump from someone local. But in case I can't, does anyone have a pump? I suspected when disassembling the motor that the failure was caused by lack of oil. Now I know why.

Not a common problem...but have heard of them going bad.

Very uncommon for a yamaha pump to fail like that very uncommon.let us
know what shows up,run good pre-mix in tank till all's well.

I'm going to check the check valve in the line that goes from the oil pump to the fuel pump next. This valve prevents fuel from backflowing into the oil pump. It may be plugged or stuck. If it's OK, I'll have to assume the oil pump has failed. I'll keep everyone posted...

yes make sure the one way valves are flowing the right way and not backwards.
OK. Just got done checking the oil pump's one way valve. It was installed properly. I removed it and blew compressed air thru it. It initially took a good blast of air to make it function. It may have been plugged, but it may have just taken more pressure to open the valve and once open, it flowed OK. So I hooked it back up and installed a temp hose to a glass jar to watch for oil. At idle, it didn't seem to be flowing any oil. But once I pulled on the oil pump cable, it began flowing oil. It doesn't flow oil steady like you would expect. It flows in a pulsating manner. Is this normal. I've never checked an oil pump's flow before. I could check it on my 99 Polaris XC440SP to see if it flows in a simular manner but it would save me some time if anyone on this forum has done this before. I want to make damm sure that the pump is functioning properly before I drive this sled. I already have $1200 in 2 new cylinders, pistons, and a crank rebuild. Just don't want to have to do this again! Please respond if you have any experience with a Viper oil pump or contact me directly on my cell @ 603-496-3990 if you can help. Thanks....Lenn

yes that is how a pump works it pulse's not a steady flow how many miles on this sled??? just make damn sure you run pre-mix and watch the bottle to see if it's going down till your happy it's working properly..
I talked to a Yamaha mech and he said the pump is a piston/plunger style pump, not a rotary like a car. This would explain the pulsing. So it may be OK. I'm going to adjust the cable so it runs rich, run premix, and watch the oil level. Any idea how much oil it should use per tank?

around 1 to 1 1/4 qt to a full tank(12gals) is what your after.set oil cable tolennstang said:I talked to a Yamaha mech and he said the pump is a piston/plunger style pump, not a rotary like a car.
