ok, checked my buddies '00 srx 700 current reading, at the red/yellow wire and black wire of the handgrips by the handle bars. we started the sled w/the multimeter plugged in and the warmer dial at minimum. we got 4.5 and at maximum heat we get 12.5. if i do the same thing w/my viper, i get .333, no matter where the dial is. the dials we checked and there is no dead spots anywhere. the resistance increases each click, as i go to the maximum heat position of the dial. i checked for rub thrus in the wiring harness, that the local yamaha dealer said to check for, but there are no rub thrus. warmers ohm out fine. i have no idea what to do anymore. the worst part is that i know ZERO about this electrical stuff. i did try 4 cdi boxes and all of them same thing w/warmers. i tried different warmer dials and still same thing. i unplugged the main ignition switch and checked the continuity from the red/yellow terminal on the ignition switch plug (wiring harness side), to the red/yellow wire, where the hand warmer plugs into (up by handlebars)....and the ohms reading i got was 48.7k ohms. that seems high. what would cause this?

Im still betting you haver partially cut element inside the grip itself causing all this.
Mione was the exact same, I think the time has come to splic in new grips, and know once and for all...worst case, return new grips, re-solder and shrin wrap originals...we're talking 10 mins and you'll know

well if he read no voltage that for sure the handgrip will not be warm

Not disputing that, but if the element is browen, sure he'll see voltage change after the reostat, but if the circuit is partially broken...or works and doesn't (like when you jiggle a cord)...for how long this has been ogoing, best bang for buck method to quickly rule out the grip(s)
well it doesnt change nothing cause went u check voltage with volts meter u ground your tools so burn or not burn be there or not (handwarmer)the voltage will be the same on the voltmeter
voltage always took the easy way to go its stupid but its the way current work...

i checked warmers again tonight w/my buddy and the handwarmers are working now. also, thumb warmer works, only approx 3/8 of the tip tho....the rest of the thumb warmer is cold. we wired in those polly heaters tonight, so i shouldn't get cold hands anymore. the factory warmers don't get as hot as my buddies '00 srx. i wonder if it has anything to do w/my 280 watt stator on my viper, instead of the 300 watt stator on my buddies srx?
hey mopar what did u find ?? i'm curious to know ......

Replacing OEM hot grips...
I followed Chilli's advice here and replaced my grips with OEM hot grips. My thumb warmer was scorching and my grips would not produce any heat -- the left one no heat at all!!!!
I replaced the grips with new OEM hot grips (now I have blue grips) and now the grips heat up and work excellent. My dial even works now!
