hand warmers are weak

Hi guys, just got done testing my hand warmers with a multi-meter and we came up with the same thing mopar1 is saying. Checked the switch and it worked fine. Checked the grips and got a little bit of resistance. This is where we think we had a problem, we check the plug (the plug by the dial switch)for volts by starting up the sled and taking a reading and we only got a reading of 5 volts. That is where we think we have the problem. Not getting enough power? What do you guys think we should be getting for a reading. And that is where we got stumped and could not find where the wires went to. So that is where I'm at with the hand warmers. Where does the power come from and what should I check next? thanks
 
sounds stupid but a ohm meter is not always accurate for continuty ..it doesnt give enough load to see if wiring is good ... we never used ohmz meter here we used a lamp that will load the wiring
 
if the wiring is haft broke it will give the result u have if everything else is good ..its the same went u try to make run a electric motor with 200 feet extension cable ...went u put the load the wiring is not big enough to bring the current..i doesnt mean its your problem ..could be reostat ,could be grip ,could be cdi ......
 
modsrx could you get a volt reading from the CDI to the plug that is by the switch. We got a 5 volt reading and that seems a little low??? where is the CDI located?
 
Speaking of heated grips, this is what I found on one of my sleds. I unhooked the grips at the connection at the handle bars. One wire is black one wire is yellow/red (color blind and doing this from memory), hooked my meter up black to black, red to yellow/red. Started the sled, at idle I get about 6 volts with dial at minimum about 12 volts with dial to maximum. At higher revs I get less volts, about 10 at maximum dial turn. Any reason why the volts drop with an increase in engine speed? With the dial unhooked (6" down from the dial) I see over 23 volts when the engine is up past idle.

could someone tell me how many volts they are getting at the plug by the handwarmer switch. I got 5 volts and that seems low. Trying to find out if the CDI is bad or my handwarmers are bad. Thanks
 
modsrx I got that reading at about 1,200 rpms, I did not rev it up and take a reading. Thanks for your help on trhis one.
 
tried new cdi box, that still didn't fix it. going to try srx bars/warmers and see what that gives me. if that doesn't do it, i will wire in those polly heater cartridges.
 
lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll....stupid but it so easy how they work can't figure why people can't fix it .........
 
info ......2000srx and up from cdi to resistor wire white/black (.5 volts) ..out of the resistor yellow and white 2.66 volts and at handswarmer yellow and red 12 volts at 3500 rpm.... hope it helps if i'm wrong let me know my handswarmer work fine here...check all those wire with a voltmeter to ground do not unplug just backprobe..black wire after hands grip should be at 0 volts it is with resistor at maximum
