difficult float bowl screws

Small vice grips to break them loose.. Then replace them with allen heads so you don't have to go through it all over again next year!! :)

I just noticed you are a gold member.. I'm pretty sure I have extra allen heads I could ship to ya if you're not working on this right away. It really makes it easy in the future. Let me know.

Sometimes all it take is a quick tap of the screwdriver handle on the screw to break it loose sometimes it takes more like needle nose vise grips. But I agree with Snowdust replace with allen screws, much better than a phillips head.

float bowl screws

i had the same problem i used vice grips worked good, i called local yam dealer they want 250 a screw thats nuts i gotta locate allen heads any idea were to find them

you can get replacement metric screws at your hardware store in those little boxs, use allen head type or phillips, which ever you like.

i recvommend using stainless if you get replacement allen screws.I got steel one's once and they corrode.

I just had to remove 2 srews that i had the heads messed up on, I had real good luck using craftsman screw extractors. They are basicaly a left handed center drill that you use in a cordless drill. You can also by a product on e-bay called grabit that should do the same thing. No damage to your carbs.

I use stainless allen heads. I just went to our local fastener business and had them match it with one of the old bowl screws, they are cheap. Just don't over tighten them, when putting your bowls back on(ouch!).

I used a hacksaw blade and cut a straight slot in the head to get a stripped one out of my old Exciter once, worked pretty good.

That's how I always get stripped ones out

Before you put a screw driver on them put a good quality philips bt in your cordless drill. put the drill on one of the lowest settingsand let it rattle, slowly turn up the power setting until it screws out. Works like a impact wrench. Maxdlx

I concour that the impact driver is a great tool for screws that won't come out and the heads are still in decent shape.

Also the Snap-on brand bits are the best I have ever used. They are about a buck each but are sized correctly and most have that anti-slip surface. I have also yet to break one.

I do the same thing but i use a dremel tool with a small cutting wheel to cut the slot, works great.

Another option is to use a set of side cutters and go at the screw head from the top. Bite into the screw head with the cutters to create a notch on either side of the screw head and turn the cutters to break it free.

Used to use this trick on Holley electric choke covers with the breakaway tamper proof screws.
