plug fouling /// what to try??

97 700SX - PSI pipes been running great for years, same jetting , same clutching, enrichener cable is all good, good compression, motor has never been apart not even for the head gasket mod, always stored in the summer without any gas in the system at all and always fogged - but last year I started fouling plugs and I'm not sure why. The plug fouling would happen after a good run down the trail when I would pull over for everyone to group back up. Not even pulling over in deep snow. Oil pump is set a few mm on the lean side.

Would run great for a long time then for no reason just foul a plug. Put a clean one in and go. But would happen later on again. I would go through at least 5 plugs a day. But then may not use any the next day. Sounds electrical to me rather than carbs................??????????? :o|

I do not think it is from deep snow blocking the pipes. I do not think it is the stator as it was replaced at 5000 miles and I think i have 6000 on it now. I think the plug caps are good, they have been replaced at 5000miles. The three coils ohm out at just out of spec but not enough to make be belive this is the problem but is the next thing to try.

any suggestions??? ;):D

dam, I knew I would forget something.......... No it happens to different cyclinders so it is not the same one all the time.

Compression is good in all three.

Sorry i forgot to say that in my long post that you guys took the time to read.

If your carbs are vented to the airbox check to make sure it is plugged in good and lines dont have cracks. If the hoses come out or air is getting in, the sled will richen up when temps go up under the hood. Not sure if your sled is even vented this way but what ever way it is vented make sure it is still that way. just a quick check.
 
CLean all of your carbs my dads 98 sx 7 was doign this last year he has psi modblasters clutched etc. it would foul plugs after a logn run or when the engine wasent under hard rpm's all i did this year was replace the reeds and cleant he carbs runs great now!
 
OK - topgunn - I will clean my carbs. That would be an easy and cheap task to do anyway.

Question - If my reeds were bad i would have other issues such as backfireing or not idleing right....................??????????????????

It's prob not this, but last year on the trail my 97 sx7 starting fouling plugs. After 2 stops noticed a missing bolt at the exhaust header. Found it in the belly pan and installed it the trail with my leatherman. Tightened up at back at camp. No fouling since.
 
you have enough miles on that set of reeds so it might be time to change em while you have carbs off for cleaning.
 
Yes, if your reeds are starting to go, it will not want to idle and will backfire as well. Also if you never updated your choke springs, they could lead to the plug foul as well.

so when u say updated do they have a better one or do u mean replace because of wear
 
Thanks for the part number Grape, I'll go ahead and get some when I go through the carbs.
