Got home late last night from a short 30 mile ride. For some reason my sled seems to be running a lot louder. My ears were ringing!

It almost acts like it is running about 1000 RPM too high at all speeds.

I recently cleaned the carbs and cleaned the power valves.

Any idea would could be wrong? Stuck power valve? Do the exhaust pipes/muffler go bad?

i experienced the same thing my first trip this year to,then i realized i didnt have my thick face mask on under my helmet.sounds dumb i realize but i swear a thick mask over your ears deadens sound.my son said it didnt sound any loader to him.

Hanker.....I know it didn't have anything to do with what I was wearing under my helmet. I wore the same thing I always do. And besides, a buddy on mine pulled up next to me at a stop sign, pointed at my hood and then put his fingers up by his ears, meaning he thought it was loud.

Zing.......It was late and I was tired so I just took a quick look and I didn't see any gaps in the joints. I guess I'll probably have to pull the pipes off and see if I see any cracks or anything.

Nobody is thinking a stuck valve or anything like that?

sxviper.......I was afraid someone would ask this. I usually don't pay attention.

Maybe 8000 at 50 mph??

It has to be something with your exhaust. You said it is way louder, and when they lose back compression they idle higher and lose power.

My bet is on where the pipes meet the manifold or the manifold itself.

If its not the exhaust make sure its not a drive shaft bearing making noise.

Other noise generators I have seen are aftermarket bell cranks will interfere with pipes and pull them off the seals in full turns. And leaks in the intake will make it sound louder as well.

jwiedmayer....It's not coming from the driveshaft and there is nothing aftermarket on it. It's either coming from the exhaust or power valves.

I would guess that you had a power valve screw that fell out or came loose. Maybe even 2. Just my guess.

After further researching your loudness, I need to change my guess to....your right cylinder lost the exhaust gasket, where the pipes come apart when you take them off. You should run to Midwest on your way home from work.

Check to see if you lost one or more of the donut type seals which go between the pipe and the manifold, right where the pipe connects to the manifolds with the springs. These donut seals will wear out over time. I lost one of these last year and had the same thing happen, the sled sounded louder as the day went on. I 15 min. fix with the right donut seal.
