HAHA! OK. I should mention that his 800 wasn't running well. He thought it was when we agreed to race. But after we shut everything off for a while he couldn't get his sled started again, until he put new plugs in. But you should have seen the look on his face, when I pulled up next to him after beating him twice. (Once from a dead stop, once both already going about 50mph.) I didn't get a chance to race him again, but Thanks to the setup listed in the tech section, and the different advice I've gotten from various members here, my sled ROCKS on take-off! Thanks guys!

Do you mean to say that the Arctic Cat WAS NOT working correctly..
Had to say it... It can be a very formidable opponent........

The cat had to be hurt or in a very poor state of tune!!

Yes, the cat needed new plugs. I think it is running way too rich. But he did say that the cat "expert" that helped him tune said, it should be jetted right. I don't think it was jetted right at all, maybe even his timing is off. Here' why... When he bought it, it had a 900 in it, but it (the 900) bought the farm, with a bent crank. So he bought this used 800 motor from someone. I'm not sure that he has the right cdi in it now. But I'm no expert on cats, so I don't know whether those are different from the 900 to the 800.

I have been working on a customers Arctic crap 800. These sleds are so poorly made compared to Yamaha and Polaris, I am advising him to sell before something else goes bad. Good job on the race, I am really not surprized, I am using Turks clutch tuning guide and you are right, take off is tremendous.

I had a 1995 ZRT 800 that I put a 136" 2" track to ride the mountains in back in fall of 1996. I previously rode a 1994 Yamaha VMAX 600STT that was all done up and before that a 1993 Phaser STT. Now I'm back to Yamaha with a modded MNT Viper.
Anyhow it took a well tune 900/1000 T Cat to get me-usually in the top end b/c out of the hole I left them eating snow dust....and I am not a small person. I had my sled "dialed in" as they say and I was stock except for V-Force Delta Reeds and a ceramic-pac stinger. My sled spanked the identical sled (short track) of a buddy who convinced me to go Cat then. I remember being in Valemont and beating a 97 ZRT 800 that had PSI pipes install with PSI heads...never should of happen-across the flats, hill climb race - the guy thought I was lying that I was stock..I helped him with what he needed to do with clutching and jetting. Seen him the next year again and his sled was finally working good.
Maybe just had a strong motor- I had heavier than stock T-cat weights in my primary to keep my rpms @ about 8400 if I remember right riding in the mountains. I can honestly say, my sled was dynoed @ 155hp.
Prior to me buying my MNT Viper last year, most of my buddies rode 2001 or newer 700MM that were either stock, some just pipes and others modded up (2 mod MM that where done up by my buddy who is a Yamaha dealer and his friend that is a dealer in BC). The modded up ones beat me but it I think if I changed to taller gearing it might of made the difference...Its all setup how you want to ride. Me I liked lots of power/torque in the bottom thru the mid range....and I climbed mountain slopes that someties I wish I didnt....lol.
Anyhow my new sled..a 2004 MNT Viper thats modded up would spank my ZRT800- a well tuned triple-piped viper gave me runs in 2003. Plus its alot more fun to throw around...LIGHTER!
Anyhow...good to see you beat your bro.

I fully agree with you. Most of my friends used to ride cats only. Notice how I said used to? The 2 guys that still own their cats, don't run them ever. Those guys that rode the cats were the ones fixing stuff that shouldn't break/ fail.

My brother is home for a week of vacation in Ely right now. He lives in Jersey, but comes home a couple times during the winter to ride. If the past is any indication, He'll be in the garage more than he'll be out riding. Every year, he says, this is the last year with either of his sleds. His other sled is a 96 xcr600. He always talks about getting something newer next year. We'll see how he's doing at the end of the week. Unfortunately I can't be up there for the whole week. Maybe I can talk him into a Yamaha!

We sold our 96 XCR 600 last fall. It was a great sled. We put 7500 trouble free miles on it. Some XCR600s had crank bearing issues until they put like a double bearing on one end, but most of those were 95 and earlier xcr600s.

Most of trouble he has is with the 95 zrt.

If those 96 XCRs were the aggressive design, than that is what I got my X-tra-10 out of, man, those things are freakin ugly and heavy as well.

Nope, the 96 XCR600 is a wedge chassis, it was the first year to have the xtra 10 as well. 95 XCR600s had the normal non XTRA skid in it.
I believe you had to get the XCR 600SE, or something like that to get the aggressive chassis. To be fair, Polaris did a lot of monkeying around with motors in body designs, even I cannot keep track of every exact year model, engine and body combo. The aggressive body was made so triple pipes could be fitted easily, but later there were aggressive body style single pipe triples as well.

Your acutally serious? You "smoked" him when you were racing in 8" of loose snow. Hell why not racing him next time on a glare of ice with no studs haha.
Goodluck is all i have to say to you, ill race a 700sx with our 01 ZRT 600 any day of the week and would be VERY VERY suprised if it got pulled.

It will take a ported or 780 SRX to pull a 800 ZRT in equal state of tune. I am sure your yammie weighs less but the HP to weight ratio of the ZRT still has you beat by far.

A well setup ZRT 800 is very fast.... Reliable NO...
The few cats I have owned or friends owned, We always ended up working on them more than riding them. When you got into the fuel injected models, repair prices seemed sky high.. If i had to choose another brand besides yamaha it would have to be polaris... JMO..

My buddy has a 96 XCR 600 and is installing his 3rd motor right now and a new chaincase with less then 2000 miles. Then its getting sold.

Something is definitely awry with that. I would say that is definitley not normal. Even with the crank bearing issues of older XCR's they would go at least 3k before any issues occurred.

I dont understand some people hatred for cat.
We have over 12500miles on cat sleds we have owned and all have NEVER i repeat NEVER skipped a beat. If you take care of them, just like you would your yammy there as reliable as can be. NO buddy this, second cousin this, we have and currently own cats and i can speak first hand there a very reliable machine.
The differences? Yamaha fit and finish is definately better, yamaha is smoother and yamahas motor is going to last longer.
Know getting into it a cat uses all the HP it can outta there motors, a zr 600 apv 5500-6000miles, ZRT 600 7000-7500miles. No yamaha but still great sleds.

I don't really hate them, I just hate PULLING them back when they break down. To be fair I've never owned a cat but after seeing the issues with the ones I ride with I never did purchase one. The ride nice and good power to weight ratio but the quality seems to be lacking and fit and finish is horrible (though its ALOT better now than it was in the 90's). I was a Polaris guy until my 95' XC600 blew up with 2100 miles on it, bought a used Phazer II to ride while I fixed it, and sold the XC600. The Phazer II has 13,000 miles on it with nothing other than a belt changed and changing the plastic sliders in the driven clutch. Bought my SX600R new in 01' and its been going great ever since, one belt change and a set of plugs so far with 3500miles on it.
