odd clunk when riding

hey guys, got to ride the new to me 97 sx 700 today for the first time and it seems theres some sort of clunk coming from the skid area. all bogey wheels are good, and the track is tensioned appropriately. It sounds as though the track is ratcheting but im not sure that could happen with the track adjusted properly. Could it be the drive axel bearings?
 
i dont have an owners manual( didnt receive one with the sled) anywhere i could find out what the proper belt is for the sled? how much can i expect to pay for a new one?
 
when i gas it, not under direct acceleration, but if i am steady about at 50 mph and then get on it some what to speed up i can here it clunk. not heavy snow maybe 4 inches at most, was just riding around the field
 
Should be setup for a 8DN if it is stock. Any dealer will know what an 8DN is.
 
yeah i hope its nothing more serious then a belt, i'll have a look at it tomorrow. picked the sucker up for 800 bucks, hopefully wasnt a too good to be true type of deal
 
Sounds like a ratcheting or broken suspension part problem. How did you check the track tension. You might want to inspect your suspension arms.
 
yeah i thought it was ratcheting but was told it was not to lose. If i could fit one to two fingers between the track and the slide when the sled is on its side is that to much slack in the track?
 
Even if it is a broken part, you should be able to fix it cheap. As long as the engine and clutches are in good shape, and the frame is good you made a deal. That is one sweet engine.
 
It should sag 1 inch to 1.5 inch with 20 lbs ( or is it 18 lbs) weight applied to it. Basically you can grab a track window and pull firmly but not straining and measure then.

ok thanks that clears up my question very well. i will check that out tomorrow, if not i'll try a new belt, should buy one anyway didnt come with a spare. one of my buddies dad took it for a spin and said he thought it was from the drive shaft area, thought it was maybe the bearing on there, so if all else fails i'll try that out.
 
hey 698...if there is a clunking sound,something may be broke.Your gonna have to inspect it.Put sled up on a stand and spin the track and see if it happens and keep your eyes and ears open.I had a strange sound from mine when I pinned it in deep snow,not very sure what it sounds like when racheting occurs,but didn't sound normal and kept bugging me.Today I spent a lot of time,defrosted the whole sled,checked everyhing over on the skid and tightened track bolts up 2.5 turns which gives me about 1" sag at 20 lbs pull.Track still rotates slighty when up on the stand(creeping a little),so I am happy with that.If you are to loose,maybe track is balooning and smacking something.
Check your w-arm for sure,because when I bought my SRX a few season's ago,my w-arm was almost toast.Lucky I spotted it early enough to save on a major problem it that arm would of twisted right up under acceleration.I have 4 w-arms in total.One on the SRX and SXR are re-welded and re-inforced.Also carry a spare for both also re-inforced.
