2001 SX600R Opinions

I need any info regarding a 2001 sx600r. Chance to buy one. I have been riding Yammi's since 1983 but do not know much about this model or engine. What we need is a good reliable sled that would remain box stock and would be ridden mildly aggressive on trails. What can you tell me about these sleds?

Performance?(will it run with MXZ 600's, just to compare)
MPG ?
Reliable(it is a Yamaha, has to be, right?)
Any known problems to look for?
Any help at all, good or bad !

OK...here goes. With clutching it will run just with or slightly behind a 600 doo but not ahead. You will be better on fuel, plugs, oil & pistons. It will out corner the doo & be wayyyyy cheaper to maintain!
 
Sled info

I have an '02 with over 6,000 miles. Replaced belt once, just because I thought it was time. New plugs each year. Have fouled a couple plugs, on warm days. I run Yamalube S oil. Let the thing idle down before you turn it off or it will back fire upon re-starting. Loosen the track to save the hyfax. Spend some time setting up the suspension to your riding style. My sled is all stock except for the control rod spacers, shock spring settings and paint work. Good gas mileage. Great trail sled. If you want to beat another brands 600 buy a 700 Yamaha and tell everybody it’s a 600. I also run unstudded, and have to replace most of the track clips this year. Throttle is a bit firm, but I have a fix for that. I do not think you will be disappointed, unless all your after is speed.
 
SXR 600

I love mine, it is a Y2K with 13,000 plus miles on it. Plenty of power till about 80, decent range. I have done a lot of 300+ mile days on it. I also have a two up seat that I use to take the kids along, have done several 200+ days with passenger. Still running the original spark plugs, I carry spares but they always go on somebody elses sled. I added a tempaflow and it is good for about 2MPG on a warm day. I run the track as loose as it will go, I avoid spinning it and it still is in decent condition. You have to adjust the skid to make it ride well which is a real pain to do, but it saves you from pain later. Stock belt will go 5K easy. Get the deluxe tank bag. 120miles to the tank are no problem with some left. Great sled! DT
 
Thanks for all the input. I do not need a lake racer, just a fine durable trustworthy machine that handles trails ok. Sounds like this should fit my needs just fine. Once again thanks for your feedback, it has been helpful. I think we shall pick it this week.
