is this a good sled i am looking at buying one and i was wondeing if i should keep looking it has 5600 miles on it. they want 2700 for it. i want another yamaha i own a sxr now. what are the common problems on this sled what should ilook for.
thanks

good reliable sled in stock form. I have heard of crank bearings going out.
A piped viper requires alot of other mods to obtain similar reliabilty from stock form and the mono (single) head design is not the greatest for cooling. The ride is "ok" but much better with Yamaha updated or revalved shocks.

this is the sled im looking at 2002 Yamaha sx viper 700 ER triple great condition adult owned. Has 5,800 miles all from canada and the adirondacks runs and works like new, stored inside, serviced yearly. Electric start and reverse. Here is a list of add-ons: 3 inch bar risers, wired for electric shield, rox powermadd hand guards, sportech bar hooks, cobra windshield, blue yamaha snow flap, 144 woody gold digger studs, blue belly pan, bender racing trail can (sounds nice), blue L.E.D neons under the hood (Definately catches the eye), and yamaha blue shock covers. Will include yamaha viper cover, the stock can, and a brand new extra belt.

Sounds like a nice machine. I have an 2002 ER with 12,750 miles and handles and rides well. Pull the trigger and you will enjoy!

I think its a little high in price but thats just my opinion, depends on the overall condition though. Mine is an 02, 5600miles. I added a rear cooler, silencer, studs, clutch kit and reeds. and replaced my y-pipe. This is my 2nd viper. I had an 02 when they came out. then got a rx1 then a warrior. was out of sledding 2 seasons then wanted to get back in cheap and reliable. Viper is the way to go. They are an amazing trail sled in my opinion.

I sold mine (02 Viper, no E start or Rev) with 4000 miles on it for $2800last year. I blew a bearing on the crank and had to have the whole motor rebuilt. It had the heads cut, reeds, clutch work, rear heat exchanger added, and a ripsaw track done to it at the rebuild. Also had heated shield, shock covers, two windshields, billet grip ends,, tunnel supports, blue snow flap, and a brand new cover. Great sled, a rocket on the trails, but I went to a four stroke for this year. Offer $2200, there are a lot of them out there.

Heck, I just sold my 03 ER about two hours ago for 4,500. It only had 149 miles on it though. Incredible sled in the 100 miles I drove it. I would have loved to keep it but the profit from selling was too good to be true.

I've put approx. 13,000 trouble free miles on an 02 ER.No rebuilds and only a broken jack shaft at the end of last year.I'd buy another one in a minute if the price was right.Still one of the best looking sleds out there.I put the upgraded shocks on it,but went back to the originals.Liked them better.
I bought a 2002 non er last year for $3K with only 52 miles on it. Great sled, but I'd keep looking unless you like all the add ons, which will cost you some about$300 by the sounds of it.

Shop around, you may be able to get a really good one with considerably less miles for the same price. bought mine last year for $3,000, its an 02, had 3700 miles on it. Rode the piss out of it last winter and now I have 5600 miles on it. Just do regular maintenance and replace whats broke or about to be broke and you should be good. I agree, great looking sleds! I'm gonna ride mine again this year then hopefully make it a backup or whatever for next year then get a lightly used apex/ltx or an attak.
I just bought a 03 viper with 5300 on it for 2500, unfortunatly i fell victim to a crank bearing failure but ive had a few friends that have vipers from new and when properly maintained they put 6000+miles on em w/ out problems, i think my situation was because of lack of maintenance, he said he fogged it.....psh yah, great sled tho from the 400 miles ive ridden mine, now i just hope the yamaha hold true to its reliability rep. w/ me properly maintaining it

With proper maintanance, jetting, fogging in the off season and re adjusting oil pump it'll go for ever.Sameyeam said:now i just hope the yamaha hold true to its reliability rep. w/ me properly maintaining it
