Its a fun job you got there. You just gotta take your time and wind back in nice and slow. I have heard of some putting a screw in a workbench and put the hook on it, wind it up nice and tight and put it back together, be careful if it starts to unravel it will go flying on ya. Next time you have to change the rope, just get whats left of the old one out, wind the internal piece nice and tight and lock it in place with a screwdriver or a c-clamp and feed the new rope through and tie it off, make sure you leave plenty of rope cause when it recoils it gonna pull it in pretty quick.

Nightmare!! I did that on my Exciter once. I ended up coiling it up tight, put some small zip-ties on it to hold, and then put it in and snipped off ties. Have to be careful when cutting the ties so that it doesn't jump back out. Oh, and make sure you put it in the right way, lol. Did that too. Four hands make it a little easier.
