Ok boys, not really a yammy rider, don't hold it against me.
I recently picked up a 97 vmax for cheep, because it didn't run, even if I primed the head it would only run for 2 seconds. The guy I got it from told me the carbs were went through and it still doesn't start. I tore apart the fuel pump and cleaned it, it fired up first pull. I thought it was fixed, the next day I tried to start it and it didn't start so I squirted some gas into the head and it fired up. The throttle response seems kinda weak, not really sure how snappy this sled is supposed to be, but it seems pretty weak. Not sure where to go from here, I'm thinking from some searching around the net it could be the impulse line on the fuel pump should I replace that? Seems like that would be pretty cheep and it would be something to try. Well, any input would be great. I'm kind of a poor wrench, so details are great.. Thanks in advance....

Since you are going to take the airbox apart to do the fuel pump I would look the carbs for myself...replace and clean parts as needed, look for a thead started by MrViper here on the site about how to clean the carbs, even if you know how to do it it is awesome...

Thank you sir, I will seek out that thread tomorrow when I get back to this sled. I need it, I have no idea how to disassemble and reassemble these carbs.
It's very easy to do it, you should not have a problem, is good to learn hoe to do it, that way you can do it every end of season to summerize the sled. Good luck and let us know how it goes....Nick

did the sled sit for a long time, while the previous owner owned it? sounds like the pilot circuit in the carbs could be a little dirty, the fuel screws possibly not adjusted right, and the choke maybe not adjusted right, so the choke (actually starter valve) isn't opening all the way, when the choke lever is flipped to full open position. all of these would lead to poor starting and poor idle and low end throttle response.

All the pictures are gone, I'm guessing they got deleted off the sever and the thread is closed, so I can't bump it... I'll PM Viper, see if he still has his pics.
Thanks.

I would check compression, and look at the plugs as well as pull the airbox off and see how clean or dirty everything is.
It's pretty easy to pull the airbox on these 600 twins.
If it is the fuel pump, that is an easy fix. You might simply have a bad vacuum hose to the fuel pump. If so, it will not pump fuel.

I used this, the carbs looked pretty damn clean.
I pulled off all the lines from the fuel pump, made sure they were free of holes. Everything seems to be right. I cleaned everything up and put it back together. Now it starts and runs, I ran it around the lake for a few minutes. I don't know how well this sled should pull, it seems doggy compared to my 04 polaris xc700. At high RPMs, the yammy pulls hard, but off the line building RPMs it's doggy... I'm gonna let it sit, get cold and see if it starts tomorrow and ride it a little longer, I'll let you guys know how it does.
ohh btw, it's for sale, I don't need 2 sleds.

Somebody else please try this link to see if the pics are back.

Compared to a 04 VES 700 polaris, it will be down a lot in power. comparatively speaking. I mean the 600 yammi has like 97 hp. That 700 polaris has like 130 or so.
Did you clean the carbs at all, or just dink with the fuel pump lines?

Yea, I followed the instructions in that "How to clean the carbs" howto that someone made. I took out the pilot jet things and cleaned everything up in there, but everything was really clean. I took all the fuel lines back off of the fuel pump and the vacuum line off, they were all free of holes. So I put everything back together, I gave it just a tiny quirt of ether fumes and it was off and running.
It sounds good..... but just seems a bit doggy at under 7000 rpms.... My main issue with it was starting, its 4 out now, so it should be good and cold when I try to start it in the morning.

Check to make sure the choke is not sticking open, that will make it doggy.
