I have a 2002 viper that is stock.I replaced the crank and reringed it.When running down and hard parked road for mile or so the temp light will come.I know that if you pipe a viper you have to install the rear cooler. Are these vipers that sensitive to cooling or could the temp sensor be faulty? The heat exchangers are warm to hot, but the motor doesn't boil over. The sled runs very good and have good top end.Any help would be great Thanks

The temp plugs have been known to be faulty same thing happend to mine

The one that is on the right side of the head? I'm going to check the motor with infared heat gun tomorrow. What should the motor be at running Temp?

I ran for a few kms on glare ice last year in order to get home quicker for a long ride and the light came on as there was no cooling from snow. It took a while for it to come on though... I then scraped up some snow to put on the running boards. Cooled it right down. Uours might be faulty though if it happened so soon.

I was surprised when I put the motor in and how quick it bleed itself.I read on here how to bleed the coolant system on a viper but did not need to do anything

hey

Might still need bleed or you may have a bad thermostate....when I put my motor back together on my 98 srx... It ended up being a bad thermostate...before the motor job it worked great so sort of stumped me for a while ....usually the most obvious is the problem in some cases...

if you are sure the system is bled properly and the light still comes on, it might just be the sensor. bud has an '02 stock with SRX rear heat exchanger and his comes on all the time when my doesn't. his coolant never boils out. he just keeps riding with no problem after 3 yrs.

Yup its at the top right of the head (the recoil side) If u ride alot of packed trails its good to dip of them every so often to get some snow into the tunnel to cool the sled down.

well there's your problem can't do that man no snow to cool the heat
exchangers, yea she's going to get hot..i'd find a rear cooler to put on
her too..

senser can be tested too if you need.

What is the best way to test sensor? It was reading 122 on dreammeter on the road and 8800 rpm, but I have no studs and there was next to no traction. Forgot gps at home lol

I bleed the coolant system tonite the way they say in the tech section.I got a little air out of the rear bleeeder under the seat but the bleeder on the head I got no coolant at all.i let it run for 40 minutes in the garage and all the coolers where warm and no temp light.

Ya you need a rear exchanger, they should have put them in all vipers. Mine used to do the same thing till I put in an SRX style one in-- especially on hard roads. Haven't seen the temp light since.

My dealer said that the rear cooler was a $100 update to a viper back when it was new.I'm going to try and find one. I bleed the coolant system and all seems well but it is cold out lol Thanks for the help Guys

I put a srx exchanger on mine this year, and it does an excellent job so far (limited mileage). Temps stay at around 130. Before the exchanger they would normally be between 145-160 on the trail anytime but crept alot higher on hardpack. That's why I purchased a digital temp sensor 3 years ago since I couldnt find an exchanger, at least to watch those temps climbing. Unnoticed they can climb up to over 190 before the light comes on... not too good.

Someone still sells them for around $100. Maybe Pioneer . . .

Exchangers that is.

However, you may have a water pump impeller problem.
