We were cleaning the carbs on a 98 XTC 500 last night and found that when blowing air in the hole where the pilot jet goes....it bubbled carb cleaner out of the fuel screw. Anyone ever had this problem? We were able to stretch out that fuel screw spring and flip the O ring around to get it to seal for now. Just wasn't something I had ran into before. The sled was poor starting at times and doggy on take off. Runs great once it gets going. Didn't get a chance to ride it yet to see if that was the problem. Originally we thought the pilots must be plugged.

you will get air to lead into where the fuel screw is, by blowing air into the pilot jet hole (the pilot jet passage leads into the fuel screw passage), cause the fuel screw monitors how much fuel is dumped into the carb's bore, from the pilot jet. i never had that problem, cause i always take out the fuel screws when blowing out passages, cleaning carbs, etc.

Well the fuel screws weren't the problem. It was still having trouble starting...but the odd thing was once it was running it ran real good. I hit 90 with it on the railbed... We started swapping parts from another XTC, and somewhere in the middle I decided to do a compression test.. We found the problem.. 60PSI on one cylinder and 110 on the other. After getting it apart, found both rings stuck on one side, and the jug scored on the opposite. Anyone ever seen something like this where it can run that stong with stuck rings? The RPM's were even bang on for the clutching I was doing.
