I recently bought a 98 srx 700, its my first sled, and I'm trying to get it ready for this season. I'm having issues with starting it when it's cold. I have to pull on it for a couple minutes before it fires. Once it's warmed up, it will start first pull. But the next day, it will be back to the same hard starting routine. Any advice.

Also, I want to replace the stock air box with separate round filters, anyone know where I should ckeck to get these?

And are there any known problem areas to check on this model sled to prevent future issues?

Thanks in advance.

i have the same problem on my 01 700 it doesnt get fuel until you pull for awhile from what i have read it sounds like perhaps a bad fuel pump any other opinions on this

it is the nature of the beast. My SRX takes a long time to start also after sitting a fews day to a week.If I am lucky..10 pulls.I may install a primer bulb to force the gas into the carbs, otherwise just remove plugs and dump a little pre-mixed fuel into each cylinder and then she'll fire up1-2 pulls and your done.No major pulling with the pull start.

I believe there was just a post similar to this and a couple of guys recommended killing the engine by applying the choke. That way the next time you go to start it there will be some extra fuel in the carbs and she will start a little easier. This is for when it is really cold or you dont expect to have it running for a while.

My 98 srx was a Biotch to start also. This was before I cleaned the carbs every single season. Now I clean the carbs every single November, and The sleds starts in three pulls when really cold, even the first time the carbs are put back on.

try richening the fuel screws alittle, it helps.Make shure your pilots and air jets are clear.

don't put on the round air filters. you will lose hp, by sucking in the hot under the hood air. also a pita to keep tuning. i would suggest cleaning your pilot jets. also, you could turn the fuel screws out to 1-1/4, from the stock 1-1/8 turns.

my srx is hard to start to gotta choke it all the way till it pops and then i 1/2 choke it and it fires right up

hard start

i also believe it is the nature of the beast. i have had my 99 srx 700 for 6 years now and every year for the first start it could take up to 40 + pulls to get her to fire. this is with spotless carbs(cleaned every year before first start)120 psi each cyl. i have learned that when i am getting ready to start her for the first time of the season - pick yourself up a 1/2 case of beer. go to the shed or garage-have a beer and tell her how sexy she is(your srx that is) pull her over 10 times -wait 1/2 hour--(during this 1/2 hr--tell her how much you love her and again how sexy she is-all of this while having a beer of course)do this for an 1 hr of so with 15-20 min intervals in between you 10-15 pulls . she will fire up within an hour--you can mark it down --be patient. its the nature of the beast. just my opinion.

Thanks for the input and advice guys, I'll take a look at the carbs and plugs this weekend. And I'll stick with the airbox.

My fuel guage just stopped working on my last outing, I need to look into that too.

That is so funny , today I went out in the garage and pulled the ol cover off and said " Honey , are you ready to ride ?" I then pulled it over 10 to 15 and then sat on the seat and talked to her , come on baby .....Its funny cause i was wondering why and then I saw this posting . Its true, hard to start , clean the plugs put them back in pulled it over again and again , no luck rested and then agian and again , I was so tired . I will try tomorrow , ya know electric start is not such a bad idea . I need to tell her how sexy she is ....haha ...good stuff . I think it will be a good wintery year , I hope

check and make sure your choke isn't adjusted too tight, i pulled my carbs and after i put them back in it wouldn't start at all, but i poured gas into the cyls and it fired right up.... so it means something wasn't adjusted right,,, i looked down onto the choke rail and could see the original "wearline" where it would normally be if adjusted correctly, the rail was going to far, so i loosened the cable and the choke is where it is supposed to be... starts 3rd pull every time cold. its a different story if i let it sit for a week or two, maybe 6-10 pulls. Nature of the beast.

I will have to look at the choke adjustment. I was checking it out the other day and when I turned the choke on, the linkage at the carbs did not move very much. I have a service manual on order, so I don't have much for info on the sled yet, what should I be looking at for a good compression reading, 125psi?

the Rail shouldn't move much at all, if it moves too much you can see a "wear line" where it should be maxing out for the choke. that was my problem.

i was thinkin about doing some sick custom type of air intake work to my sled in the future.... Something like 3 seperate stainless steal tubes going up on a 90 degree angle and have 3 seperate k+n air filters on each. would look badass, Taking what mopar1rules has to say about constant tuning in addition also.... might be a PITA.
