Views on Yamaha's new 4-strokes
Maybe its just me but when browsing around the 4-stoke forms most threads seem to be very negative. Not sure why. Do the new sleds have that many issues? Maybe people on these forums (2-stroke) don't expect as much from their sleds due to their age and tend to be more positive. I read one post on a Nytro and a guy says that if Yamaha doesn't "step up to the plate" they will be switching brands. As far as I'm concerened the new Nytro is way beyond anything I expected from Yamaha. It seems that no matter how good a sled gets people always want more.

Customers do not do their homework before they purchase a sled. Buying a ditchbanger with a 7 gallon tank ain,t the right sled for 200 mile days on wide fast trails.

The FX Nytro forums are a hotbed of 'issues' right now because of it's young age. It will settle down after a while but you always have people having a bad day and think TY is the place to vent. Most of the other model forums are much like it is here. Sledders helping sledders enjoy their toys. I'm sure there are times when we saw that here and I imagine it was probably when the Viper came out with those really stiff shocks. Same poop, different model.

I think a lot of it is that you have people with no brand loyalty who buy whatever the hot sled is for that year.
They think the sled is going to be perfect and they like to make threats that if Yamaha doesnt, "step up to the plate", make things right and kiss their butt, they will go elsewhere.
IMO, those people also tend to ride a sled hard and then when it breaks, they wont even consider the possibility that rider abuse was the cause and feel the need to vent on a forum.
Id bet that if you asked Yamaha riders who you see out on the trails with new sleds, you would find the vast majority of them are very happy. Its just that you have the select few who feel the need to constantly vent on internet forums.
Thats kind of the bad part of the internet. What starts out as a huge problem on a handful of sleds quickly gets blown out of proportion to where everyone thinks that its a huge problem on every sled.

Ian, TY is a place to vent.
It is a place to vent where people are listened to by other people that have for the most part, the same mind set as they do.
They know that Yamaha does read this site and others, why, because if they didn't they would be a very DUMB company.
They vent here also in the hopes that others who have the problem will add to their posts and get together a group that together can either come up with a fix or give them a verbal backrub and tell them it will be alright. Either way, it makes for a great site.
The reason it seems like less bitches over here is that we over here that have two stroke sleds didn't pay 12,000$ to have cold hands and blown shocks. I would be pissed too. Last I knew, this was a Yamaha site, good or bad, not a Yamaha love fest. Being critical is the first step to improving a situation. Bring on the BITCHES!!!!!!!
the above rant in now way should imply that i have any hard feelings tward yamaha and or any of their family members, direct or indirect.

You would be negative too !
There are real problems with phazer and nitro front suspensions . Yamaha is known as the best quality sleds , i don't know how this happened but it is true . My 1989 phazer has the original starter , yet almost every new phazer starter broke . A new sled front suspension should not be shot in 1 year .It is more than just new model issues .I LOVE YAMAHAS , but there are quality problems .

people over on the 4 stroke side are bitching because they just purchased a 11-12000 thousand dollar machine to freeze there fingers off, or bent a subframe with 10 miles on the machine from hitting a chunk of ice for say.or frozen steering colums. and so much ice & snow build up that you actually start losing pieces of your sled. & after you purchase this high dollar machine & have to add $400 for a decent set of skies to enjoy the day of riding...i too would be upset if any of these problems happened if my sled was brand new..
dont get me wrong i understand you need to adjust the suspension for your riding style.etc.different tracks or stuff like that. but you shouldnt have to hunt down a set of 06 apex handle bars so your hands dont freeze.i love the looks of them but i think yamaha should have done more testing before the release.

As much as I want a new nytro, I have not heard all the ranting over the handlebars or other issues. On my demo rides of all 3 fx nytro's, I never had cold fingers/ hands. And it was very cold that day last year.
Granted, I still have yet to sign up on the 4 stroke side. I should though....

People wanted a lighter 4 stroke, Yamaha made a lighter 4 stroke but I'm sure they have to engineer less quality into it somewhere. Like skidoo, I can't figure out how they cut ~50# from the Rev to the RevXP when the original Rev has chassis strength issues. I think Yamaha is running into the same issues with weight reduction. I'm soon going to a Phazer MTX since my riding style has changed a bit, Its more about all around performance and utility for me instead of Point A to Point B as fast as possible and a 4 stroke Yami fits the bill perfect for that.

4 stroke woes
I took the leap over to the 4 stroke side this year. I've been exclusively riding Yamaha's for over 18 years now and have always bragged up their commitment to quality (fit & finish) and durability. Yeah, they've had a few models in there with gremlin or two, just like everyone else, but overall, they have met my expectations and then some, or I would be riding a different brand right now. I just came off of a '04 Viper S, which was a great sled. The handwarmers worked ok, compared to my SX-R, which we all know had handwarmers that could melt your gloves. I bought (2) '09's, a Nytro XTX and a Venture GT for my wife and kids. I knew going into this, that the Nytro wasn't going to block the wind as well as the Apex's and that Yamaha has had a bad reputation for crappy handwarmers for several years now. And that some of the '08 Nytro's were experiencing front suspension issues. And of course they come with the industries smallest gas tank. I can live with the the 7 gallon gas tank since the mpg is better than my Viper. I can bolt on a taller windshield to stay warmer. But like many others have bitched, I am going to bitch about the piss poor handwarmers and crappy skis. There is absolutely NO excuse why in todays world, that there should be a handwarmer issue. When they have been widely known to be the best in the industry only a few short years ago!! There is also no excuse why their skis suck so much. The skis sucked on my Viper S too, but I tolerated them because after doing some suspension adjustments, they were ok, but not as good as the skis as the fist Vipers had IMO. My Nytro still pushes in the corners and I adjusted the front limiter straps down to 2 holes from the bottom. I only have 250 miles on it so far, but none of my past Yamahas required this much suspension adjustment to make them turn.
ok, I feel better now:-) But having a forum like this is awesome to be able to share opinions with other riders with the same or similar sleds. Without negative criticism, the sleds would never get better. But they still have some issues that need to be taken care of.
Thanks for the great site guys!

It is very simple. before the introduction of the rider foward sled by skidoo back in 2003, every sled was pretty much the same as far as chassis, power, looks, motors etc. Now That skidoo has pulled so much off with new chassis designs that ARE light years ahead of pre 2003 models, NO other company has sucessfully made a leap that far ahead. The bar has been set high since 2003 and has only been raised higher and higher and higher. Skidoo is not the most reliable product, but they are definitely the company that seems to have any balls to build something NEW!!
People are bitching on the 4 stroke side because they pay 12k for a sled brand new that doesnt handle well and has stupid issues that should have been corrected years ago. Yamaha needs to put better skis on thier sleds for sure and has had to for along time. Who would not be pissed off when you pay all the $$$$ for a new product and it requires much much more $ and time to set it up just so its close to the competitions production product. Skidoo is so far ahead its like yamaha just entered the seen. I'm sorry but I would rather own a recreational product that is well desinged, inovative and fun to ride, then own a recreational product that falls short year after year after year.
Remember RECREATIONAL vehicals such as sleds and 99% of the time used for only fun and excitement, its not a damn jumbo jet, or tank, truck that is made for work, and is not desired for work. Snowmobiles are recreational, not needed 99% of the time. That means when someone pays 8-14k for a recreatinal product new, they expect alot out of what they got from the box.
Its all these companies fault for charging so much for sleds. If a new sled like a nytro went for 6-7k new, people wouldn't expect so much, therefore not as much to bitch about. When a company raises the bar so high on prices, its products expectation from the box are greatly raised. On top of all of it when there is competition that raises the bar so high and keeps pushing the envelope every year, quality or not peoples expectations are greatly raised.
ride a 2004 skidoo rev, ride a 2004 yami 4 stroke and tell me which one RIDES BETTER AND IS MORE FUN/EASY TO RIDE. Once you see the difference you will notice how much of a leap skidoo went for and what yamaha gave up.
An rx-1 rode/handled worse then a viper, vmax, sxr etc. A 2003 and up rev rode/handled 10 ten better then a 2003 previous zx chassis mxz. One company moved foward, the other held back. Knowone who loves sleds to death truely wanted a 4 stroke, every one who loves sleds wanted better handling, more fun, smoother operation. Skidoo took a leap yamaha and others just dont have balls enough to cross. As far as I'm concerned I love my 2001 yami, but will never by anything newer from yamaha until they either charge less for a product not as fun as competition, or they finally grow a pair and make a recreational product that is more then a motor.
My 600 sdi is a 2006. I get the same mpg as a yami 4 stroke if not better. I get 10mpg or so on my 2001 yami, 17mpg + on my 2006 sdi. Most 4 strokes get 15mpg I ride with. For me what did they gain? Even if the usa made it completely illegal for 2 strokes they could have made a good chassis by now and built a better 4 stroke for it. Its going into the 2010 model year and skidoo has 4 stroke, 2 stroke, and chassis.
2010 and still 2 strokes, I think yamaha had plenty of time by now.
Watch slednecks 11, tell me whos sleds are the rage, and whos sleds are missing. Hell watch any slednecks video and tell me the same. Do we all ride like that.. NO, but we all ride on snow.

I agree - the 4 strokes from yamaha need to go to the next level b4 I jump ship on my viper.
If I had to buy a sled today, I hate to say it, but it would probably be a poolaris.

Negative ?
MAXOUT01 , THAT IS PERFECT ! It could not be said better . My problem with yamaha's is the wieght , i can't move them around anymore . I think alot of this is because of 4 strokes . If you notice the new skidoo 4 stroke is way heavier than a revxp , and a diffrent bigger chassis .

The new doo 4stroke is still a lot lighter than the yamahas.
I would probably buy a brand new nytro xtx if I were in the market for a new sled now. Even if I were to find the hand warmers too weak, I could fix that with aftermarket items. A taller WS would be a good idea as well. Even if the tank is only 7 gallons, getting hopefully 15 mpg or better will put me at over 100 miles per tank. The trails I ride are all well marked, and have gas bare minimum every 100 miles. A small 2 gallon gas can brought along would add a lot of mental security to me, but Yamaha should make the tank bigger from the factory.

Hey motofishsled,
is it your phazer you can't move around?
Better get out the ol weights and pump up a little.
When I can't move my sled around, I'll quit sleddin. The weight doesn't really bother me for the riding I do and the reverse works slick. I only wish it had another 40 hp under the hood! LOL!
NOS next year!
Cheers,
Rick.
