My trusty and up until now very reliable 1998 vmax 500 won't run. It will start but it misses and back fires. Carbs have been cleaned and I disabled the TORS just to rule that out. Any ideas of what to look at next?
may be stupid but did you put new plugs in it ?
I should have added that it has brand new br9es.

Adding this to the above suggestions. If you have done all the above correctly and still get backfires especially when cold look at the exhaust donuts. The fiber donut at the end of the Y pipe that seals with the pipe.
My 600 backfired all the time when it was just started and the pipe was still cold. I replaced the donut a few seasons ago and have not had that issue since.
Also make sure the pilot jets and circuits are good and clean and the fuel screws are set to the proper turns out.

check the air box for anything that don't belong there
Thanks for the tips.
PTO side has no compression, cylinder walls look like crap, gonna tear it apart tomorrow. Anyone have a 500 cylinder and piston for sale?
