can somebody tell me where the speedocable goes on the motor? currently my speedo/odo doesnt work and i want to check and see if it was just unplugged to not rack up the miles by the previous owner before i purchase a new cable. Tachometer still works for what its worth

Probably a broken speedo needle, Its an easy fix most of the time, just remove the 3 bolts down at the axle on the clutch side, you will see the cable running down to it, remove it and there should be a square needle that goes into a hole in the axle, that is most likely broken, hopefully its not stuck in the axle, that can be fun to get out, but if it is still retriveable it should pull out, get a new needle and pop it back in to the housing, sometimes they can be rusted in the housing and might take some work to get out.

hopefully that isn't confusing.

EDIT: it should pop out of the housing, it just gets pushed in, When i saystuck in the axle, sometimes the needle can break off flush with the axle shaft, making it impossible to retrieve. most of the time it just corrorodes right at the point where it gets installed in the housing....

hope that helps ya out

when that needle goes bad it usually means that the speedo side drive shaft bearing is not too far behind.

Ya that bearing is about to let go and/or has let go.. When it starts to have too much play it breaks the insert that drives the cable.

When your at the dealer pick up the bearing too. It is not cheap but it is cheaper than a speedo drive and a tow back to your hotel.

If thats not the problem in the first place. I would check that first and make sure the bearing is ok. Don't want to have that go out going down the trail.

Can I re-word this for him? Look behind and below the secondary clutch(the larger one that the belt goes around)and you will see a silver assembly (I'll call it a cover) that is held on with three nuts. The speedo cable should be plugged into that. If it is there and still doesn't work, remove the three bolts and pull the cover away and there should be a square key that goes between the cover and the inside of the drive axle. You will also see a bearing. That key is designed to break-away in case that bearing fails or if your cover gears freeze up or corrode. Just examine all of those parts and see if you can figure out what failed.

can any of you guys describe typical symptoms of how the sled would ride/operate if that bearing was bad? nothing seems to clunk or anything when im riding

Its usually noisy. But most often the first sign is the speedo going out.

Your going to get a lot more vibration through your left foot than you are through your right foot if the speedo side drive shaft or speedometer bearing(s) are bad.
If the needle that drives the speedo is broken off in the drive shaft and will not come out, you may have to heat up the end of the drive shaft (after taking it out) to pull out the insert that the needle is seated into. The insert and needle can both be purchased fairly cheaply from the dealer. If it does not come out with heat then you will mostly likely have to drill it out but, be careful not to get the hole the insert goes into oversized or offcenter. If you do you will probably have to J.B. weld the insert back in.

It appears that the area the cable needle goes in is threaded in the shaft. Am I correct? If so, which way does it unthread? Probably locktite on it too right?

I have had that bearing go bad within 1 year of installing a new one. 700 miles were put on the sled and then put away for summer. When I took it out of storage , I took the track off in order to make it a long track and the bearing had rusted over summer. Water had gotten past the seals and into the bearing. Before the cover went back on I installed a grease nipple so I could pack the housing full of grease and maybe keep some of the water out. I don't want to replace that expensive little bugger every year.

nope it is not threaded into the shaft. But when they break they twist and and unravel which is why it seems to be threaded. Make sure that you try really carefully when you pull this out, because once you don't have something to grab onto you are in a world of hurt:) Mine came out of the drive shaft but not out of the speedo gear!! I had to get another.

River..- I was actually talking about the section the pin goes in. I was looking in the microfishy and it shows a threaded inner section of that axle shaft that the pin goes is. There's even a part #. Mines pin is broken off about a 1/4 " inside the openning. Grrrrrr.
Matt- if your asking me, I'm about an hour and a half from ya. I bought the trailing arms off your SRX. Thanks for the offer though.

Well the last one I did that was broke off inside took about 2 1/2 hours to get out with a dental pick, heat from a torch, penatrating oil and beer...if you take your time it will come..best i can do for ya!!!!

Yep I see it part # 8K4-47577-00-00 I am not sure on if you can get that out or not......I have never been down that road...hopefully someone else will chime in!

Something is wrong with that picture. First of all, they don't show the speedo key, and second of all, I've never seen that part that they show.

I think you just have to dig that key out of the shaft. By the way, the key is square and almost looks like tightly wound wire. Maybe if you get a bite and start pulling it will "unwind."

I was under the impression that the insert(no, not the drive key) was pressed in, but I could be wrong. The insert is there because making a square hole in a solid shaft is a little hard to do in a production setting.
