when I switch my high beam to low beam the tack resets. Doesn't do this everytime but does it consistently.

checked the usual wire rub spots, under motor, around handle bars, etc. the tape was rubbed thru in some spots but the insulation of the wires were intact in all cases.

could this be a weak stator and how do I check this with a meter?

any other ideas?

EXACTLY what I went through last season, its the stator. Putting on the brake also made the display shut off/turn back on.

You'll need a fly wheel puller, and be very carefull with those phillips head screws on the stator. Make sure you have a bit that fits them very well, they like to strip pretty easily.

the other day i was sitting at a road crossing and i was at an idol and the tach turned on and off a couple times, i thought maybe it was because the idol was to low, so i turned it up to about 1400 RPM. and it has gone away. Does this sound right?

I'm pretty sure that idle rpm is 1800. Don't know why someone would want to turn it down.

If the idle is too low, yes the tach will reset. His is doing it when he switches from high/low beam, and I'd be very willing to bet it also does it when he hits the brake. Usually symptoms of a rubbed harness on a SRX, but seems to signal the stator is going out on a Viper. Still worth it to check the harness before buying a stator, but he's already been through his harness. I went through this last year, stator was the cure.

I have almost the same deal gonig on with my viper right now, mine just does it randomely and also the headlights dim. I read if you turn off your thumb and hand warmers and unplug one headlight you can test the stater. Once you have it "unpluged" start it, if the it goes away then the stator is weak, if it still does it then its a wire shorting out somewhere. I don't know if this works but i'm going to give it a shot tomorrow. Good luck.

Don't lose a bunch of riding time over this like I did last year. Check the harness because it's free to repair if thats the problem, but my money is on the stator. I'll try to find the thread from last year for you guys to read.

Vipermnt, that test should work. Taking all the load off the stator should let the display work properly.

Do an advanced search, in the area for post by a user put in my name, "mod-it". Put in search for threads from a "year ago or newer", and look in "SRX/Viper" section. On the third page of results there arefour threads on this problem.

I have an extra stator so I will switch it out and see if the problem goes away. I have switched them out before I just didn't pick up a puller until yesterday. The proble is the used staor I am switching could be weak also. Next I will just start unplugin the harness in different places to see if the problem stops. Thing is the tach doesn't reset everytime I switch the hi/low beams.....tends to get worse though the longer I ride.

I'll keep ya posted
