hi guys, been a wile since ive been here. interested in installing a dual carb setup on my 79 440 exciter. has anyone ever seen this or have any experience in doing this. looks like a setup from possibly a 480 phazer might bolt up. thanks for any input....

The 480 Phazer stuff will not bolt up. You will need to make manifolds for it. I made the mistake of buying a set of intakes for the phazer 480. THEY DON"T fit. You can of course run a phazer 480 top end with machining of the cases to fit them. Do a search and you may find more info on this.
yea, ive been reading on that. seems like a good performance upgrade. although this is the best all around sled yamaha ever made. it starts good and i can idle it without fouling a plug, with good performance. maby i should just leave it alone...

is there any advatage to this over throwing a phazer motor in?

Phazer engines don't bolt in and the axial fan tower has clearance issues.
An Exciter 485 engine looks stock to the average Jo, is a cool sleeper and is easier to do than trying to make the Phazer engine fit.

Dan is right. Phazer reeds are bigger than the Exciter so the bolt pattern is wrong. 750 Vmax-4 carb boots do bolt up to the Exciter 440 cylinders with a little trimming of the internal rubber. Don't remember if Phazer carbs will fit them though. I'd have to check.

On our old 76 exciter which was ported sled was awesome
with just the single 38mm keithin roundslide carb and stock
pipe. Time and money better spent on porting to possibly an
aaen single pipe. I also wish I would have tried a comet clutch
as getting tuning parts for the old yamaha primary clutches seems
scarce. Sled will run forever just use the roundslide from a 76-77
exciter and ditch the butterfly carbs.IMHO
Hope this helps ya

Olav Aaen says that a good single pipe is the way to go unless you're going full out racing. Easier to tune a single pipe. I'd be tempted to go with an Aaen single, have it coated (so it doesn't rust underneath the wrap) then wrap it with his wrap and tune from there with a good primary. Simple basic formula, pipe, clutching and set-up! If you're looking for more power beyond that, go to a bigger sled! G.

exciter
I dont think you should do a whole bunch of different things to that machine, they are 1) Bullet proof and 2) only need minimal adjustments for performance. We have a 79 440 exciter and people say its faster then older MXZ 440's. We tune the clutches (YP clutches need to be tuned every 100 miles) and set them. And like the other poster said i think that you would be further ahead with a fresh rebuild and just cleaning up the ports would make that thing real fast. We also put a spring in the primary that was a little stiffer then stock which made it engage at around 4000rpm.

I have used the Aaen single pipe that he sold for that sled and it worked really well and was easy to setup and tune..

hmm
Dont think it would but you could just drill new holes in the motor plate and mock it up to fit. Why didnt you just fit the exicter motor or get a new one, they are a faster motor. Arent the SS's a dog?

STX 440 Goes Good
I grass raced a '77 STX/Exciter for a few years and it was essentially stock. That was about 18 years ago and vintage racing was an unknown at that time and I just ran an "old sled". It may have been old but it would beat the Indy Sport with the 440 fan and I beat a venture one time and it had the 485 in it and it was no contest. SkiDoo didnt have anything in this class until the 440 MXZ Fan cooled but they weren't very quick. The only 440 fan cooled sled I hated to see and race was the 1992 Jag Special and they were pretty much unbeatable and this one in particular could even run in the C stock and win some runs. Everything else saw my tail lights and the hole shot was impressive. I would go to races sometimes and they wanted to put me in improved stock because it sounded like I had a pipe on it. I would actually have to take my owners manual to show them the pictures. Those were the days...I don't think they even grass race around here anymore, but back then it was normal to see 120 sleds show up for an afternoon of racing. Something we used to do was race off old snowmobile tracks if you were not studded and you could race against those that were studded. It was pretty hard on the tracks of the bigger machines though, but what a launch lol. The spring preload on the secondary can make you or break you on that sled and the little things can make a big difference.
I still have this sled, but have it for sale, but will not sell unless I get what I want for it lol.

The 750 boot is offset to one side. The 750 cyl used a longer flange on one side of the intake after the reed for "push" or even flow to both side transfer ports. I'd keep that in mind if you guys are going to run them on other cyl's
I've searched the forum after tuning I can do on the cylinder and pipe.
have read on the forum but did not find it any more.
thanks guys

I have oval raced an Exciter for a few years, and can tell you that "pipes" and "porting" will get you nowhere. put a polaris p85 or a comet 102 on it, and pm me for a set up, you WILL beat all the "piped and ported" exciters out there.

I agree, I copied some of 8.1 setup, works great
