oil pump

i HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A 97 500XT THAT i GOT NEW,SEEMS TO USE MORE OIL EVERY SEASON ,HAS ABOUT 5000 MILES ON IT,wHEN i GOT IT NEW THE CABLE WAS SCREWED UP ,AND WITH THE DEALERSHIP GOING UNDER IT NEVER HAS HAD A YAMAHA PRO MECH LOOK AT IT. i HAVE A NEW CABLE IS IT WORTH PUTTING IT IN?

If you use a lot of oil, I bet your oil pump is shot as well.

FWIW, I have never had oil pump issues on any other sled I have owned, or heard about oil pumps failing on all the other brands. Heck, I have over 15000 miles on the 87 488 indy trail and it still has the original pump, never had to touch it.

The near 200 dollars for the oil pump alone is a tough hit by itself.

Yes some of those sled had oil pump issues. If the pump wears out it pumps more oil.
These pumps only regulate the oil flow below 30% throttle, after that they r supposed to be pumping for a 50:1 ratio. If u r using more than a quart/tank then your cable is out of adjustment or your pump is worn out.

Hey mike, i checked my pump today and when it is at idle the mark is about 3 - 4 mm past. not sure if it makes a difference. I see pumps all the time on ebay and even bought a brand new one a couple of years ago

there's no idle mark to go by... the only one's your concerned about is when throttle lever is wide open, that the marks are in line...

at full throttle my mark was 6 or 7mm past the mark. I had too slighlty bend the bracket, and now the mark is 1mm shy of the pump mark at full throttle.
All are snow is gone now, so I cant even try it. But my plugs were black and oil soaked so I was definatley useing too much oil.....thanks for all the help....
I will let you know how I make out....
mike
