my 01 msrx is idling on the center cylinder, you take both outer plug wires off and it doesnt change the idle but when you pull the center off it dies, when i give it full throttle it hits on all cylinders and runs like an srx should, i pulled the carbs and clened them, didnt change anything, changed the plugs, checked for spark on all cylinders, all cylinders made me jump a couple inches, i am at a lost, dont have a compression guage so i put my finger over the cylinder and each one blew it off. any ideas??

Similar problem with my 98 700.
Only its the clutch side its runnin on.
Compression good, getting gas, weeks spark left side, no spark other two holes!
Really frustrating.

I had similar issues, and changed out all 3 coils, wires and boots.....no weak spark anymore.....

the spark looks strong on all three cylinders and i grabbed the wires and they all made me jump, is there another way to test how good your spark is?

Yes you can get a spark tester. Also you should be able to ohm the coils.
when you cleaned the carbs- did you take out the pilot jets and make sure they are unobstructed-ie you can see thru them?
i would try removing the spark plug on outside cyls and squirting in some gas. then reinstall plugs and pullstart. see if it initially idles on all 3. that may indicate a pilot jet obstruction.

Try using the starter plungers (choke). If it idles on all 3, then you likely have clogged pilot jets. Test the coils and plug wires and caps (they do fail). How are your reed valves?
There is an outside chance that you have a mechanical issue.

did you try 3 new plugs?

yes i replaced all three plugs, when i first start the thing cold it hits on all cylinders but when it warms up it idles on only one, i doesnt seem to make a difference if i choke it.

also, which are the pilot jets? i pulled everything apart and cleaned everything but i dont really know what is what. it there a writeup somewhere on carb disassembly and reassembly?

and yet another dumb question, how do i know if my reed valves are good?
u need to take them off and look at them for crack or bad sitting

I am having the same problem on my 01 SXR. I re-took the carbs off last night and did the copper wire trick in the pilot circut, no obstuctions here. I pulled reeds next and found one of the four petals on 2 of my V-force were f-ed up. I put the stockers back in w/ the spacers and re-assembled all. Pulled plugs to fill carbs back up w/ FRESH fuel(tank drained prior) and re-installed new plugs. Same darn problem!?!
Tomorrow I'm off to the parts store to get some starting fluid (No, I don't have any!LOL) I'm thinking my crank seals might be bad??? Anybody know where else to turn here?

Thanks Yamahead. Didn't think of that! It has 3 fabulous SLP homes in it. I'll check on that 2 and get back.

is yours just idling on the middle cylinder also?

Yup, it idles w/out choke on center cylinder only. with choke in middle pos. all 3 fire fine and is fine every where else in the throttle position to WOT w/ no choke.
I just sprayed starting fluid all around the crank seals @ idle w/ no choke and no difference(WHEW) Guess she's still tight there!LOL
I am going to do a quick compression test and check the pipes for squatters.
Also re-check the carbs, maybe float problem?
I also notice my old worn out boots from airbox to carbs may be obstructing the air jet, would this maybe have something to do with this problem?
