I remember those times well. Some got out in Canada and some racers like Tim Bender got some here but the truth is nobody cared. When Yam canceled them it was no big deal, just a failure. Even over the years if somebody wanted one they probably could have got one for little or nothing. It wasn't until recently that people think they should be valuable. I wouldn't take 3 '82 SRX's for 1 SSR!

AND TOO ADD TO DYNO, BECAUSE OF FALSE HYPE, MANY THINK TODAY THE 1981 SRX IS THE ONE THATS RARE. MANY APPROACH US AT VINTAGE SNOWMOBILE SHOWS WHEN OUR 81 SRX IS THERE AND SAY '' THATS THE RARE ONE ''. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Talk about one hell of a sled-parkthats almost similar to my toplist to,but i reealy got a thing for the 86 and 87 'maxes, especialy the 87,think those are getting kinda rare,i have only seen 86'es here in norway
But yeah, the SSR or the 82 Srx got to be the most desirable. The ultimate would be the 74 srx sno-pro,but from what i heard, they are all gone

I agree with you that the 82 VIN in Europe would start with RT499-010101
Chuck, you might want to change the start VIN for the 82's in Europe to this.

How can you say that the vin start with 010101 here in Europe?
There is a engine with number 000101, and further the number starts with 001001 in the US.
So the number can start with 010001 here, but nobody knows for sure. The European story is quite different than the US.

Just to go back a bit on this subject……The sleds Yamaha cancelled were put into a warehouse in Toronto.
The late Alex Mayes used to work for Yamaha at the time – and somehow he nabbed a few engines as one of them showed up at my race mechanic buddies place….in a midget race car. Bill worked with the guy and had the car running in the top 3 – no clutch – just yanked off the turns.
Bender did get some specials of another model….to oval race… however – his chassis was a factory effort helped – all light weight. He had the engine over a Jims S. place in NY on the dyno. He thought Yamaha might not have been smart enough…so he put bigger reeds in the thing…it went slower.
The 81 SRX (don’t argue with me here) would not jet to optimum performance. By chance – it turns out if you bolt a set of 83 …500 pipes on that sled…well – it was like getting a brand new snowmobile engine. It ran faster…burned less gas – was an absolute dream to jet….pretty well impossible to seize.

RJH. The Srx 500 Motor is Piston Ported. Do you mean that there were added Reed Cages on it by Bender ?
Can anyone confirm that the SRX 440 -81 will run stronger with the Vmax540 Pipes
Thank You.

My writing is confusing...it is two seperate things here ....one story about Bender...the other story is about the 81 SRX. maybe I should keep just one thought
What ever engine Bender raced - it was a reed block - he added bigger reeds and block welded to the engine - and Jims dyno in NY) showed less HP. Agian - this is the facory engine Bender got. He went back to the stock reeds....and won a ton of races. I just thought that was interesting..as my thing as a young guy was to saw off the reed block - and weld on a 6 petal manifold and go...
I said the 500 pipes on a 81 SRX - it was done - its better - believe me!
I also said it jetted better - - in other words thru the range - I'm not sure what happened at top end.....a mj is a mj. But it got there a hell of alot faster.
To go fast - or have fun on the trail - all jets need to be right from the pilot up. There are several jets in a carb...with the stock pipes...the 81 SRX was not good.
Tried....big mj with a lean midrange - small mj with a fat mid range -nothing would work "correctely" on that sled. The 500 pipes are the answer.

...and by "500" you mean 540?
there probably arent a whole lot of srx/vmax 500 pipes around, but if the 540 pipes make the 81 srx 440 "behave" then thats very helpful for many people

The SRX 500 #8R9 Pipes with Can looks the same to me when i compare them. As the Vmax 540 #8U9 Pipes and Can. The only difference is that it seems that the 500 pipes are maybe tuned better. It have a metal ring welded inside before the Header Pipe section. Just like the SRX 440 -81 Pipes have. And the vmax 540 Pipe Have not that kind of ring inside it.
