'97 sx problems?
I recently obtained a '98 sx 700 for an unbeatable deal.
It is missing a large chunk of the track but, I have a track waiting.
It doesn't want to start once it has been run for a while. Any ideas?
I have rode with this sled before and it has been trouble free for years. It has been maintained well.

Does it start if you crack the throttle while pulling? Most yamis like a little throttle to fire up.

I haven't even picked it up yet, maybe sunday. It was something that just started happening after he had owned it a few years.
One other thing, It has a very obnoxios can on it, I need to replace it with something quieter. Any suggestions?

Check the classifieds on this site, somebody might have a stock one cheap. If not ebay will
stock can is the quietest ...and makes more power

I have a freind that had a 97 sx7, he had the same problem, hard time starting after being heat soaked. It turned out to be the stator. I don't know if this is your problem but might be a place to start.

I've read a little on here about stator problems. Is it common on THIS sled?
Will not start when its warmed up? Stator.
Very common problem. You want to check the wiring under the motor for rub-thru's as well. Try a search and you should find the specs to test the stator. Good luck

First try cracking the throttle, and see if that helps. How often where the carbs cleaned, and were they done right. May just be a fuel screw issue or bumpupthe idel some. Maxdlx

Went and picked it up today. It sat outside, uncovered since the track failed. The motor was seized. I've pulled about 5LBS of leaves out of it so far.
I got it in the shop, Aimed the salamander at it, Got out my portable torches and warmed the engine up good. I ran my torches out of gas and the engine still didn't roll over. About a half hour later I grabbed a hold of the clutch and it rolled over easy. I turned it on, flipped the choke lever and started pulling. It fired up and filled my garage with white smoke quickly.
I then turned my attention to the track. It ripped pretty much one whole side off the track. A big strip is still held on by a couple lugs. It damaged the back of the tunnel just a little and removed the snow flap.
I found out why the track failed!
I didn't but a wrench on those adjuster bolts. I cut the track to pull the suspension. Apparently, someone at the service shop forgot to tension the track. It was the right side of the track that failed. That right idler got some pretty severe damage from hitting that bolt.
I really HATE red paint! Anybody got a blue hood and seat that would like to trade?

You need to get the stator and coils checked. If you can get a service manual, there are some test procedures in there, if it's the stator there are some good used parts places in most popular snow mags. You have to keep an eye on the I'll call it a basket bolted to the mag, that the pull starter engages, came off my 97 and screwed up the recoil and took a fist sized chunk out of the crankcase. That chunk is still missing but with the replaced basket and recoil she is running just fine.

That cowl looks to be a 97 not 98. Lots of "blue" parts on E-bay.

You are right about one thing, It is a '97. Sorry about that guys.
There is nothing available on Evil-bay for blue parts.
I may just do a custom paint job IF I decide to keep it.
I am keeping my Phazer for short trips/fun sled. Should I change gearing while I'm in there changing the track? I really need to know what the problems are with this sled before I get in to deep. What are the fixes for the factory short comings?
